Here's the tea...
Scooter Braun has just brought Taylor Swift's entire back catalogue of music from Big Machine Records. Big Machine, an independent Nashville-based music company, is home to artists including Sheryl Crow, Lady Antebellum, Thomas Rhett, Rascal Flatts and Florida Georgia Line.
Scott Borchetta founded Big Machine in 2005 with Taylor who was then 15 years old. She was first act he signed after discovering her performing at a cafe in Nashville. Taylor released six studio albums with this label, and it’s growth has essentially mirrored the country singer-songwriter turned pop star’s rising success. She became a free agent last year and formed a new, long-term deal with Universal’s Republic Records. Ownership of her previous recordings remains with Big Machine in perpetuity.
Taylor spoke out about this in a heartfelt Tumblr post. She indicates that she would have preferred to buy her old recordings -which she mainly penned by herself at a young age. However, this offer wasn’t given to her. She describes this as a ‘nightmare’ and that she is ‘sad and grossed out’ by this.
Previously, Prince and Michael Jackson have spoken out about how record companies treat their artists and their back catalogues.
Fans and other celebrities have taken to Twitter to show their support for Taylor.
Some have even started a petition on Change.org to encourage Taylor to re-release her first six albums. The link to this can be found here
Here’s a list of celebrities who have shown their support for Taylor (so far) by either speaking out or unfollowing Scooter’s Instagram: Little Mix, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Camila Cabello, Rihanna, Alessia Cara, Halsey, Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj, Cara Delevingne, Sky Ferreira, Todrick Hall, Eminem, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Joe Jonas.
