The 369th Infantry Regiment — also known as the [Harlem Hellfighters](https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/remembering-harlem-hellfighters) — was a renowned and highly decorated unit of Black combat troops who served in World War I. They spent 191 days in the frontline trenches, which was more time in combat that any other American unit of its size at the time.

During WWII, Drew successfully [organized a national blood bank system, procedures, and protocols](https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/color-blood) to assist British forces to treat military and civilian casualties. When the US entered the war in 1941, the American Red Cross appointed Drew as director of the first Red Cross blood bank.
