He's Back, He's Back, He's Back. Tokyo Odaiba's Giant Robot Is Back.

Last March, Japan's Bandai Holdings announced they were dismantling the giant robot from the long-running Gundam TV series. Fans were devastated. An announcement followed that a new robot would rise triumphant. And here it is at last, Gundam Unicorn!

After a four-month absence, the Gundam robot is back by Tokyo Bay.The new robot, RX-O Gundam Unicorn, stands 24 meters tall. Six meters higher than the original. Construction of Unicorn is almost complete. As of August 17th, he was only missing his face plate, left arm, feet, and some pieces of armor.

The original Gundam Statue guarded Diver City Shopping Mall against alien invasion from 2014. And what a good job he did. We weren't invaded. Not even once!  Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. decided to swap the old Rx-78-2 Gundam statue for a newer version last March. Why it took so many months to replace, no one is saying.

Most of the fencing has been taken down giving visitors perfect views of both the robot and the work in progress. (No timetable has been released on the actual finish date.)

The Gundam Front theme park on the seventh floor of Diver City Mall has undergone significant changes as well. Not all for the better. Gone is the Gundam Front exclusive film, oversized Gundam models, and other attractions.

Instead, Gundam Front has been turned into Gundam Base. A huge gallery and store for the show’s iconic Gundam plastic models (GunPla for short in Japanese) with the focus on retail sales. Building and showing off models of Gundam figures is an integral part of being a Gundam fan boy or girl.

Gundam Front opens officially on August 19th. Website.
