What Jane Eyre Character Are You! (in Freudian Terms)

You are locked in an attic for 10 years by your husband and find out that he has a new girlfriend. What do you do?

Would you ever date outside your socioeconomic status?

You were bullied your entire childhood by your wicked cousins and your aunt. They tell you that you are worthless, ugly, and troublesome. What do you do?

You got Bertha! In the novel, Jane Eyre, Bertha's personality correlates to the area of the personality that Freud refers to as Id.

Bertha Mason aka Id

You got Jane! Jane is the representation of the Superego. The Superego provides the societal guidelines that children learn from their parents and other role models by the age of 3-5. It allows the ego to achieve goals that are morally “good” as well as assessable. If the ego does not perform well it gets guilted by the superego.

Jane Eyre aka Superego

You got Rochester! Rochester represents the Ego in the novel. The ego is the part of someone’s personality that deals with the Id’s needs in a way that will not result in negative consequences in the real world. The ego uses rationality in order to obtain the pleasure that the Id needs. It tries to contain the Id’s desires so that it can obtain the pleasure in a realistic and harmless way. The Ego is weaker than the Id and cannot always stop it from doing something negative to achieve it means. The goal of the Ego is to achieve the Id’s pleasure in a way that causes no harm to itself or the Id. The Ego does this through problem solving and learning from failures, and is how people obtain self control.
