You are Baroque art! This means that you probably have an appreciation for emotional richness, tension, fancy stuff, and some slowly-built-up drama, although maybe not in your own life. Maybe you're someone who loves intense books and movies, or perhaps you daydream about wild stuff, both good and bad, happening to you. Baroque art emerged in Rome in the early 1600s and spread across Europe. While not all Baroque art is religious, the Catholic church was responsible for its creation and popularity since it lent itself well to the sort of religious art the church wanted. Baroque art is very emotional and grand, and would bring feelings of wonder and devotion to the common Catholic. Other important characteristics of Baroque art, sculpture, and architecture (which were often combined) are chiaroscuro and tenebrism, movement, and realism. The pieces are meant to be dramatic, theatrical, ornate, and emotionally intense.

Yay! Academic art is one of my favorites, so I bet you're a cool person. You probably have a love for beauty and history. You're a deep thinker and most likely very smart. Academic art is the style of art that was approved and taught by the French art academies, popular between 1560 and 1900. Bouguereau's work is a beautiful example of academic art. It's an extraordinary style, but its standards of what good art is were pretty rigid, so much so that the academies lost some authority as art developed and changed. Academic art was influenced by classical and Renaissance art and meant to be intellectual, well planned through sketches or wax models, and carry a certain sort of message or moral; there was even a ranking system to determine what subjects in art were the best, with historical painting at the top. Religious scenes and uplifting allegories explained by titles (i.e. Bouguereau's personification of night titled "Night") were also popular. Academic art was realistic in some ways--colors were natural, brushstrokes were invisible, final work was very polished and finished, and rules developed (or...rediscovered) by Renaissance artists about light, foreshortening, and perspective were followed. However, academic artists painted many nude and sometimes clothed figures that were always supposed to be idealized and unrealistically beautiful rather than totally realistic. They studied anatomy very closely and worked from classical sculptures, old master paintings, and live models, painting perfectly smooth, pale, skin and soft, "perfectly" proportioned faces and bodies.

You are hyperrealism! This means that you probably love complexity and seeing the world around you from different angles. Some people might not understand you or think that you're wasting your time, but most people value your company and love to hear your thoughts. Hyperrealism grew out of photorealism and got quite popular in America during the 1970's. Unlike photorealism, where artists use amazing technical skill to make a painting that looks almost exactly like their reference photograph, hyperrealism puts a focus on emotion and narrative. The artists still use photos for reference, but try to portray their subject in a new way and might add pieces to the art that aren't part of the photo. While hyperrealism and photorealism have been criticized as offering nothing that a photograph can't, a lot of hyperrealism also includes even clearer and sharper detail than you would get from life or a high-quality photo--hyperrealism isn't surrealism but it can feel surreal to the viewer because it looks so much like reality but also shows more detail than you see the real world. Hyperrealist work is usually between 10-20x larger than life, requires a ridiculous amount of skill, and seeks to show us the world in a way we can't see outside of art.
