Tommy Dorfman And Her Husband, Peter Zurkuhlen, Have Reportedly Filed For Divorce After 10 Years Together

The 13 Reasons Why star explained why they chose to "redefine" their partnership "as friends" last year.

Tommy Dorfman and her husband, Peter Zurkuhlen, have reportedly initiated divorce proceedings this week after more than five years of marriage.

The couple first met in 2005 and formally tied the knot during a November 2016 wedding ceremony that took place in Portland, Maine. Several outlets, including People and E! News, cited official court documents in articles confirming their divorce today.

The reports come roughly six months after Tommy — the actor best known as one of the breakout stars of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why, and who recently appeared in Lena Dunham's comedy Sharp Stick — clarified publicly that she's a transgender woman in an interview with Time magazine last July.

"Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman," Tommy said, calling the interview a "reintroduction" rather than coming out announcement, since she "was never not out."

At the time, Tommy explained that she'd been living privately as a trans woman for about a year and said her relationship with Peter had evolved with her transition. "It's wild to be 29 and going through puberty again. Some days I feel like I'm 14," she shared. "As a result of that shift, the types of romantic partnerships I seek out are different."

"I was in a nine-year relationship in which I was thought of as a more male-bodied person, with a gay man," Tommy continued. "I love him so much, but we've been learning that as a trans woman, what I'm interested in is not necessarily reflected in a gay man."

"We've had incredible conversations to redefine our relationship as friends," she added. "Transitioning has been liberating and clarifying."

Peter reposted one of Tommy's photos from the Time magazine spread on his Instagram story soon after the interview dropped, and captioned it with a supportive message. "So much love," he wrote. "You are gorgeous and you are fully you. Proud of you, T."
