I don't know about you — but in my own personal experience, when people talk about Andrew Garfield they typically aren't chasing his name with the phrase "isn't handsome enough."
To the contrary, some of the most prominent discussions about the actor's appearance in recent years have involved debate over whether he was "too sexy" to play Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man. Feel free to consult the Reddit thread for more details.
Anyway, the general narrative surrounding Andrew's good looks was apparently a bit different about 17 years ago, when he auditioned for a role in Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia franchise at the beginning of his career.
"I remember I was so desperate. I auditioned for Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia and I thought, 'This could be it, this could be it,'" he recalled during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, before going on to note that "handsome, brilliant actor Ben Barnes ended up getting the role" instead.
"I think it was down to me and him, and I remember I was obsessed," Andrew added.
So when he didn't land the part, Andrew asked his agent what went wrong. The conversation, according to Andrew, supposedly ended like this: "She eventually just broke under my incessant nagging, and she was like, 'It's because they don't think you're handsome enough, Andrew.'"
"Ben Barnes is a very handsome, talented man," he reiterated. "So in retrospect, I'm not unhappy with the decision and I think he did a beautiful job."
Plus, Andrew has found lots of career success since the alleged Prince Caspian critique — he just won his first Golden Globe for Tick, Tick...
