Ken Livingstone speaks to Sky News on Friday.

Ken Livingstone has mentioned Adolf Hitler yet again in a live TV interview – on the day of the local election results.

The former London mayor was suspended from Labour last week after suggesting Hitler was a Zionist in the wake of a major anti-Semitism row.

After embarking on a wave of media interviews to explain his comments, he promised last weekend to keep a lower profile and tend to his newts instead.

But on Friday, as Labour digested results from councils across England and being pushed into third place behind the Tories in Scotland, Livingstone decided to mention Hitler again.

Ken Livingstone Bingo is literally a grid of 16 squares, all of them with the word Hitler in them

He told Sky News: "A lot of people, it's a shock to discover there had been that relationship between a small section of the Jewish community and Adolf Hitler but it's historically true.

"And the simple reality of all of that is we shouldn't be ashamed about some of the mistakes our government has made in the past and I don't think the people of Israel need to be ashamed of what happened 80 years ago."

Tricky media day for Labour. So Ken Livingstone's on Sky News talking about Hitler.

Livingstone denied that his initial comments about Hitler had been "unguarded and ill-advised", saying it was simply "historical reality".

"The simple fact is that no one would have paid any attention to that except that you then had this group of MPs screaming I was a Nazi apologist and all that nonsense," he said.

"And of course that dominated the newspapers for days and I think it's disgraceful but they've been planning and plotting all the way through the first part of this year to try and undermine Jeremy, get bad results at this election so they could attempt a coup to get rid of him.

"That's failed abysmally and I think those MPs have got to start putting aside all their hatred of Jeremy."

Ken Livingstone now talks about Hitler so much I can only assume he's after a job on The History Channel.
