How Did My Favorite Movies Know My Major Before I Did?

I’m the type of person who feels that a person’s favorite movies tell a lot about them. If I told you a few of mine you’d gather a few things about me as well. For example, you’d know I have a fondness for “Selena” and another common theme in my favorite movies other than Romantic Comedies is Journalism. This wasn’t on purpose of course – these movies just resonated with me. I related to the in some shape or form. I always just thought I liked the movie and actress which are common reasons for which you’d like movies. However, recently I discovered that I wanted to major in Journalism and then it hit me – three of my favorite movies include Journalism and quite the fabulous journalist! Let’s start with the holy grail, shall we? The Devil Wears Prada. Where should I begin? The whole movie screams fabulous and to be honest with you its playing in the background as I write this. I relate to Anne Hathaway’s character Andy Sachs because like me she just wants to be a journalist. I don’t know a lot about fashion and I am somewhat inept in the makeup department. However, by no means am I professional. I just have the passion, drive and learn fast just like Andy did. I also love how she eventually builds her confidence and becomes grateful for her job until inevitably getting a little bit carried away. In the end, of course, she figures herself out and makes her dreams come true. I don’t know about you but I can totally get behind that. Now for a less fashion forward movie – How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days! Who doesn’t love that one? McConaughey and Hudson? Fabulous mix – they are those on screen romances that you never get tired of watching kind of like Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore? Movie perfection. Anyways, in the movie, Kate Hudson’s character’s name is Andie Anderson. Another Andie? Well will you look at that? Andie is a “How to” girl for yet another esteemed magazine. Unlike the other Andy she’s well into her career but wants something different for herself. I’d personally love to be a “How to” girl – I love articles of that kind. In any case, she’s doing this huge piece and the mess that ensues is basically the rest of the movie and the charm it holds. The ending though, is similar in the way that she does find her way in the journalism world too. Now for the journalist of all fictional journalists – Ms. Carrie Bradshaw! This is a no brainer. I’ve loved “Sex and the City” forever. As if I need to explain who she is but for the sake of writing I will. Carrie Bradshaw is a Sex Columnist for “The New York Star” and basically my real life goals minus the sex columnist part even though I’m not completely against it. I know that I won’t be gallivanting the streets of NYC any time soon with my friends or running in heels nonetheless. Manolos aren’t in my near or distant future either but that’s okay. I’ve loved and related to this character simply because she is fabulous, smart and a journalist as well. She writes. She does adorable research on her topics and even shows a little bit in the show about being a writer and her struggle with finances even if she rather have the latest article of Vogue than eat. That’s her prerogative. Regardless of her priorities I love her and of course relate to her because who doesn’t? Well I’m sure some people don’t but I sure do. My point is for years I’ve loved these movies and related to these characters and never realized the recurring theme. Journalism. I was always so stumped on what I wanted to do with my life or if I’d even do anything at all. So much so that when it registered in my brain that I am a blogger and have an immense love for writing – I want to be a journalist. It was soon after that I noticed that many of my favorite movies include journalist. If I want you to take anything away from this piece it’s that you should take stock in your preferences and read the signs – your answer might be under your nose or in my case in my face all along.
