10 Things We Learned About Mädchen Amick and Mina Tobias at the “Another One” Music Video Release Party

1. This is the second music video Mädchen Amick has directed for daughter Mina Tobias...and they wouldn’t have it any other way

Their first collaboration, “Kings and Queens” was released in 2016. “She understands me,” says Tobias of her mom in an interview with Fanversation’s Yael Tygiel. “She understands how to direct me--what things work and what things aren’t very good for me as an artist...I knew that it would be done in the right way.”

The element of trust and the priority of artistry went both ways, as the somewhat sexy nature of the video didn’t bother Amick. “I think I’m able to separate the performance of it from my daughter,” she says.

2. Mina hopes to follow in her mother’s directorial footsteps someday

“I’m obviously too inexperienced now,” Tobias says, “but whenever I do music videos, I send over my ideas to someone more qualified. Hopefully, with more acting experience and as I do more and more videos I’ll be able to consider it down the line.”

3. One of Mina’s songs was written subconsciously

Her song “Freedom” came to her entirely in a dream--music, lyrics, and all. “I woke up and immediately wrote it all down,” she says.

“I always pretend I’m dueting in the car with them,” Tobias admits. Considering some of her inspirations include Prince, Janet Jackson, and Aaliyah, she clearly has good taste. Hit her up, guys.

5. Mädchen misses when MTV used to play music videos

“It’s such great storytelling,” she says of the medium. “They’re like little mini movies. It’s always been my love and passion.”

6. Mädchen is a Beyoncé fan

She admits she took inspiration from Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name” video for “Another One.”

7. Twin Peaks creator David Lynch also influenced the video

Amick, of course, starred in Twin Peaks as Shelly Johnson. Lynch once told her about a short film he directed with a rotating stage. It always stuck in her head, and she decided to incorporate a similar element into this video.

8. Mädchen wants to encourage more women to start directing

“I wanted to be a director my entire career,” she reveals, admitting she used to make excuses as to why she didn’t go for it. “We need our voices out there, so there’s no excuse.” Her advice on how to get started? “Just fucking do it.”

9. Mädchen thinks Riverdale’s Alice and FP are “soulmates”

“They’re like kindred spirits,” she says. “They’ve grown up together. They’re soulmates. Their worlds have torn them apart, but they’re slowly finding their way back to each other.” Bonus: when asked what their theme song would be for this season, she chose "Wild Thing" by The Troggs.
