This underrated 2010's movie really does have it all! A totally badass female protagonist, who can more than hold her own, a 'home invasion' style horror premise, creepy animal masks and twists and turns that will keep you on your toes and guessing as to the characters true motives right until the end! It manages to both pay homage to horror tropes, whilst also subverting expectations and is absolutely a must watch. If you like this movie- I would also recommend 'Ready or Not' (2019), 'Hush' (2014) and 'Wait Until Dark' (1967).

You're Next (2011)

This indie horror is a criminally underrated hidden gem. It has an exceptionally likeable protagonist, and comedy and horror in equally perfect amounts. The plot revolves around a shy young man, who is struggling to make new friends stumbling across on invite to a Halloween party. He summons the courage to show up, only to discover that he is the guest of honour- at a party searching for a murder victim. Mayhem, misunderstanding, horror and hilarity insue! This is the perfect 'meta' horror for fans of movies like 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'New Nightmare'.

Murder Party (2007)

An artsy British Horror Anthology- of sorts, where nothing is as it seems. If you like genuine gut wrenching revelations, mixed with brilliantly paced horror storytelling and just a touch of dry wit for good measure, then this film is absolutely for you. The film follows supernatural skeptic Professor Phillip Goodman as he embarks on a journey to investigate three unexplainable events. Its a slow burn, and a movie that rewards those who pay attention. It doesn't rely on cheap jump scares, but instead on a feeling of unease- all absolutely worth it for the pay off. If you enjoy this film I would also suggest 'Don't Look Now' (1973) and 'The Canal' (2014).

Ghost Stories (2018)

If you like Horror Movies that subverts your expectations, then 'The Others' is for you. What for the majority of its run plays out as just your typical 'family in a large old house is haunted by ghosts' story, but the end has morphed in to something entirely different, and a whole heck of a lot more interesting and exciting. In a sea of haunted house movies, this one absolutely stands out, But sadly doesn't always get the love and appreciation it deserves. If you liked this movie you might also enjoy 'April Fools Day (1976)' and 'Alice, Sweet Alice' (1976)- which similarly turn horror tropes on their head.

The Others (2001)

If you like truly spine tingling horror movies like 'The Exorcist' then this one should definitely be on your Watch list! This Spanish horror flick follows Laura, her husband and adoptive son, as they purchase and move in to the orphanage that she grew up in. Her childhood there was very happy, and she dreams and restoring and reopening the building. However soon after they move in, her ill son goes missing and she begins to her voices that she believes are ghosts leading her to son. It is incredibly tense, very creepy and one you'll probably not want to watch alone! If you like this movie, I would also recommend [REC] (2008) and Dark Water (2002).

The Orphanage (2007)

Thought of in many Horror circles as being the first 'Slasher' movie ever created, this film is often overlooked in a genre packed with iconic slasher villians. However this movie has so much to offer! Its incredibly feminist for its time discussing topics such as women's bodily rights and women not being believed when they come forward about sexual crimes such as stalking. The film also pioneered the 'call is coming from inside the house' trope, as well as the setting horror movies over a holiday period. While the remakes are very lack lustre, this original definitely deserves more love. If you like this film, you should also check out 'House on Sorority Row' (1982), 'Slumber Party Massacre' (1982) and 'When a Stranger Calls' (1984)

Black Christmas (1974)

This Korean flick is an incredibly eerie psychological horror, with a killer twist- that absolutely deserves to be more widely viewed. It is actually loosely based on a popular Korean fairy tale "Janghwa Hongryeon jeon". The acting is stellar, and the story is complex and intriguing. It loosely follows the lives of two sisters, who have just returned home from a stint in a mental institution. However they now have to contend with two new dark forces- their stepmother, and a dark entity taking over the house. Its really best to go in blind with this one, and let the twists and turns entrance and terrify you! If you enjoy this film, you might also like 'The Wailing' (2016) and 'Hidden' (2005).

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

If you are a fan of meta horror comedy like Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead- then you are sure to love this movie! 'Tucker and Dale vs Evil' takes the horror trope of the back woods 'rednecks' out to get unsuspecting teens and turns it completely on its head as lovable protagonists Tucker and Dale are judged to be shady characters by a group of teens- who begin inexplicably and accidentally killing themselves in more and more obscene ways in an effort to thawt the none existent evil plans of a completely bemused Tucker and Dale- who are just trying to do up their new cabin. Its the perfect comedy of errors, and mistaken identity- and has as many laughs as it does gory deaths. It may just be the perfect horror-comedy. If you liked this movie, then you should also check out 'The Final Girls' (2015) and 'Cabin in the Woods' (2010).
