March 8th is International Women's Day, so lets celebrate these Badass Women of History!

Choose Some Random Things, And Be Given A STEM Woman To Find Out More About!

Lovelace was an English Mathematician and writer. In 1844, she wrote under the name A.A.L about an 'Analytical Engine', a mythical machine being developed by herself and Charles Babbage. She explained how this machine could handle complex operations, and envisioned a time when it could deal with all kinds of tasks such as 'creating music'. She was essentially describing her work on the earliest imaginings of a computer. Though the machine was never bulit, the set commands she created is considered to be the first computer program. A century ahead of her time.

Ada Lovelace

Stevens was the geneticist who discovered an organisms sex determination by its X and Y chromosomes. Her discovery was falsely credited to Thomas Morgan, who claimed she was merely a lab technician, despite her conducting this groundbreaking research independently.

Nettie Stevens

Apgar was an Anaesthetist, who invented the 'Apgar Score'. This is a way of assessing a newborns health quickly after birth, which is used worldwide by Midwives, nurses and doctors. She also made great strides in increasing awareness for infant health and birth defects.

Virginia Apgar

Ride was a physicist and Astronaut, and at 32 became the first american woman, and youngest american to go into space! She made numerous contributions to her fields, including helping to develop the space shuttles 'Robot Arm'. Although her 27 year long relationship with partner Tam O'Shaughnessy wasn't made public until her obituary, she became the first known LGBT Astronaut!

Sally Ride

Roebling was the first female 'Field Engineer'. She oversaw the design and construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. Although she planned this alongside her husband, she ended up taking over most of his duties, including day to day supervision and project management. As a reward, she was the first to cross the bridge by carriage. After completion of the bridge, she became one of the first female lawyers in New York!

Emily Roebling

Chin was a Physician, and the first black woman to hold an internship at Harlem Hospital. She was also the first woman to ride with the ambulance crew. Once qualified, she was barred (because of her race), from affiliations with formal hospitals. So, she set up her own practice, to provide care to those who couldn't normally access it. She was a fierce advocate for early cancer screenings, in low income communities, and helped develop the pap smear to diagnose cervical cancer. She also started a society to help black women, go to medical school.
