14 Things You Probably Believed As A Kid That Turned Out To Be A Lie

I was today years old when I finally found out that gum does not take seven years to digest.

At some point or other, you've probably had an existential crisis due to finding out that a lot of things we were told as children are actually complete myths.

Well, I've come up with some of my favourite ones, and want to know how many you also believed!

    1. Turning the light on in the car while driving was illegal.

    2. The panic-inducing "fact" that if you ate apple seeds, a tree would grow in your stomach.

    3. Pulling a face at your parents could lead to permanent changes if the wind picked up.

    4. I know I wasn't the only one who was told they'd get square eyes from sitting ~way~ too close to the television.

    5. The teacher's fave: the cautionary tale of what happened to the child who leant too far back on their chair.

    6. Was I the only one who was ~convinced~ that drinking anything while driving (yup, including water) was illegal?

    7. Speaking of drinking, the full belief that you were too underage to drink caffeine.

    8. My parents can't have been the only ones who said that the park closed at 5 pm during week.

    9. I'm going to also assume that we all believed the moon was following us whenever driving anywhere at night.

    10. Ahhh yes, the greatest lie you could tell a child: stores don't sell sweets to kids.

    11. That reminds me, was anyone else told that when the ice cream van played music that meant they'd run out of ice cream?

    12. Remember the sheer horror of pulling a leaf off a bush, and then being told it's pretty much a crime?

    13. I was today years old when I finally found out that gum does not take seven years to digest.

    14. And let's unpack why we had to wait over an hour to swim after we ate something.

Let us know in the comments any other things you believed as a kid that you now know aren't true!
