Quick Ways To Get In A Good Brushing Habit

I’ve long been someone who has neglected their dental health, which isn’t a fact I’m proud to share. Perhaps that came from the fact that I lived in a home that didn’t mandate brushing. In fact, going to the dentist wasn’t something we often did, and so I sort of just did the absolute bare minimum as I grew older by brushing once daily.

As you can probably imagine, brushing just once a day with no flossing or trips to the dentist for years and years eventually means your dental health starts to become a bit poor. I never had anything terrible happen besides a handful of cavities and some minor gingivitis. Luckily, I’ve righted that ship for the most part as of late.

So if you find yourself in a similar situation as I was, it’s time to step up and make a change in your life. And making a change, I do understand quite well, isn’t that easy by any means. Getting started and actually sticking to a routine is quite tough, to be honest.

That’s why we’ve come up with a few ways to remind yourself to brush your teeth twice daily, and they’re bound to whip your routine into shape within just a few weeks.

    Associate showering with brushing

This probably sounds a bit weird, but it’s how I got myself to start brushing twice a day. Before, I always brushed once every day. When I made myself get into a new routine, I figured I would start making myself brush a second time whenever I happened to shower. So, since I take nightly showers, it got me to brushing in the shower at night, which I never used to do.

Don’t knock it until you try it! It’s also made me do much better at flossing, too, since I use floss picks and can remind myself to do that in the shower as well.

    Set alarms on your phone

This one works well enough for our daily wake up routine, considering smartphones take over a lot of the responsibility in our day to day lives. May as well schedule in an alarm for brushing that second time in a day as well, right?

    Carry around a to-go toothbrush

This one is for anyone who claims to not have enough time in a day. By carrying around a travel toothbrush that’s discreet and out of the way, you’ll at least guarantee a second brushing after lunch at work or even at a random point in the day when you need to get up and go to the bathroom. If you employ this method, make sure to keep your travel toothbrush close on your body (a pocket) or in your purse.
