If your tooth is severely damaged due to decay or removal of internal infection after root canal procedure, the dentist may decide to cover the weaker structure with a dental crown. Moreover, a dental crown can be used to hold the prosthetic tooth, i.e. a dental bridge. Moreover, you can get a dental crown if your tooth is badly discolored or misshapen. It means that it can be used in cosmetic dentistry as well.
There are many materials the crowns are made up of. Some of those materials include:
•All metal
•Porcelain fused to metal
•Zirconia
•Porcelain fused to zirconia
•All porcelain
The crowns which contain metals do not have the color that of the teeth. Therefore, those crowns are better suited in the back of the mouth. Moreover, those crowns are very strong. If you have got the front teeth to cover, you can go for crowns with porcelain in the composition.
Preparing tooth for crowning

Before you get the crown, you will have to undergo the procedure that has been causing infection. In many cases, the crowns are required when you undergo a root canal therapy. This therapy is a procedure to remove the inner infected pulp of the tooth. However, the procedure leaves the tooth with much weakened structure. If the tooth is beyond being treatable through filling, your dentist may choose crowning.
If the major part of your tooth’s structure is missing, the dentist may choose to set a base for the crown. This foundation is useful when the tooth is largely decayed. The dentist will also remove some of the tooth’s structure to make room for the crown.
In most of the cases, crowning completes in two dental visits. The first visit involves preparation of the room for the tooth and measurement. The second visit involves fitting of the crown.
The procedure of measurement involves taking of the impression of the teeth. This impression tells the dentist how the crown is going to be appropriately fitted among other teeth.
After the crown

After you have got the crown, you should not feel any discomfort because this procedure is fairly painless. However, you will have to pay attention to what you eat and how to maintain your oral hygiene. These are going to be only a few days in which you will have to remain cautious about your crown. Later on, you will get used to the new structure in your mouth.
Make sure that you visit the dentist every now and then to ensure good health of your teeth and proper fitting of your crown.
