10 Reasons Why People Hate Awards Shows

With awards season in full swing, there isn't a more appropriate time than now to discuss this.

1. They’re WAY too long and boring.

No explanation is necessary for this one because it's pretty self-explanatory.

2. They’re very out of touch with reality.

Most people have no real interest in awards shows. A large part of this is due to the fact that the movie-based ones nominate films that nobody has heard of, or because a lot of the less prestigious ones are clearly rigged (e.g. AMAs, etc.). Unfortunately, the show runners continually fail to effectively reach the people (probably because they're stuck in their own reality).

3. People only care about a select few categories.

As important as the lesser known categories are, the sad truth is that people could care less (e.g. Costume Design, Editing, etc). These less popular categories are what causes awards shows to drag, ultimately making those who do win in the bigger categories to rush their speeches because the show runs out of time (e.g. Casey Affleck at the 2017 Golden Globes).

4. Awards shows try to hard to attract millennials.

Just stop. For the most part, millennials have no real interest in awards shows and the obviously planned "viral" moments don't make it much more appealing either. This age group tends to just catch up with what they missed on their Twitter timelines!

5. Most of the awkward pre-rehearsed, fake moments that are supposed to come off as genuine feel very cringe-worthy.

Does anyone else get uncomfortable when two stars--who have no connection--are paired to awkwardly read a lame, unfunny skit off a teleprompter? Please, raise your hand because everyone has been personally victimized by this practice at some point.

6. The best, most important categories don’t happen until the end of the show.

In order for viewers to see the winners within the most crucial categories, awards shows force viewers to watch all the way until the end of the show. Naturally, many of us stick it out because we're troopers (and alcohol helps, too).

7. For the bigger shows, new episodes of your favorite shows won’t air because they want to force you to watch the show.

This reason alone is probably the one of the most annoying things about awards shows. However, with the rise of digital streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, we now have more options in avoiding them.

8. Awards shows often don’t nominate or award the right people.

At the end of the day, awards shows run on politics and money. Therefore, some stars never receive recognition. In other cases, some are awarded even when there was a fellow nominee that was much more deserving.

9. There aren't much variety in nominees.

Have you ever noticed that the same 10 people get nominated across the board consistently? Taylor Swift, while a good artist, is among the ranks of celebrities that will get nominated no matter what. And as much as the world loves Meryl Streep and her incredible talent, not all of her performance merit a nomination slot that could easily go to someone else.

10. A good portion of the time, the shows don't choose the best people to host it.

For some reason, award shows have a tendency to pick boring and unfunny hosts (there are exceptions, like Ellen DeGeneres). If Seth Macfarlene's 2013 hosting stint wasn't reason enough as to why he should never be allowed to host again, then we don't know what is.
