Mancations: 5 reasons you need to get away (and where to go)

Let's face it: Family vacays are great, but sometimes, it's bro time! Time for you and the guys to escape ... and not to a kiddie park, a fun house, or a museum (unless that's your thing). This weekend's for you to hang out, not shave, slack off, and chill out. And if it's been too long since you've done any of that, here's your starter list. You're welcome.

Hit the (Kentucky Bourbon) trail

Sure, it would be easy to wander by your favorite watering hole for a round or two, but why not go straight to the source? Producing more than 1/3 of the world’s bourbon, Louisville is the bourbon capital of the world. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail boasts nine historic distilleries including Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, and Wild Turkey. Nearby you'll find a plethora of local bars plus restaurants to sate every craving. Or nurse a hangover.

Hit the trail. Really.

Fancy yourself an outdoorsman? Even if you wear a suit every weekday or code all night in a dimly-lit start-up, there's a little Daniel Boone in every bro. Whether you hail from a small town or big city, sites like can help you find your path ... and a little green space to explore.

A round of another kind

If you're going to spend most of your day trying to hit a small white ball into an almost-as-small hole in the ground, you might as well do it at America's greatest public golf course. Pebble Beach Golf Links. Hugging the spectacular California coast, this historic course has hosted the game's most illustrious players and tournaments. Oh, yes, you'll shell out the green to hit the green, but as they say, "Every golfer deserves to play Pebble."

Go on a Surfin' Safari

The Beach Boys may have immortalized the beaches of Southern California, but North Carolina's Kill Devil Hills sounds so much cooler (and maybe a little dangerous). This small town and prime surfing spot located in the Outer Banks is host to the annual Eastern Surfing Association championship. If you'd rather not catch a wave, you can try kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding. Refuel after a day on the water with a craft beer and local seafood.

If that IS your thing...

There's no shame in appreciating art and antiquities and the museums that house them. But this is a guys getaway, so if you're going to appreciate, at least do it at a manly museum. Head to Los Angeles to check out the Petersen Automotive Museum (cars), The Autry National Center (cowboys), and the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits (dinosaurs and sticky, stinky tar). If you're feeling highbrow, there's always The Getty Center.
