10 Top Movie Moments Featuring Flannel Shirts That Will Inspire Your Holiday Attire

Flannel is practically synonyms with holidays, and here are 10 movies that prove flannel's iconic status!

In the 90's, flannel became a sort of trademark for Gen-Xers and grunge singer -songwriters. But before they wore it on stage, in front of cameras or even held guitars, many movie stars wore this cozy fabric.

And when we say "flannel," we mean the patterned one, not cotton (although both can look great).

In light of my favorit, e holiday shirt, I wanted to take a look back at some icons from TV shows and movies that rocked our world with their button-downs.

Not only is this fabric warm and soft, it's also quite fashionable.

Since flannel has become kind of an iconic symbol for men who grew up in the 90's, many movie stars that were part of that generation took the opportunity to wear this comfy material on stage or even off-duty!

A shawl collared shirt can be worn by all kinds of guys, but they can vary in cut, style and quality. Portuguese flannel is some of the finest in the world and can be dressed up (or down). On the other hand, you also have cheaper versions intended for work outdoors - think hiking, skiing, and even woodworking.

So now let us take a walk down memory lane and see how some your favorite TV characters used to wear their flannels so cool back then!

    1) Shane Falco of 'The Replacements'

Although he didn't play for his high school football in his hometown of Permian, West Texas, Shane Falco (played by Keanu Reeves) still found himself on the Washington Sentinals' roster as a placekicker. And even though he may have lacked team spirit, he made up for it with his own thing: flannel.

    2) Josh Baskin of 'Big'

Although he professed his love to Susan at Coney Island's arcade game "F-14 Tomcat," Tom Hanks first wore flannel when he was just 12 years old in Penny Marshall's "Big" . And although this was supposed to be 1986 Brooklyn, New York, you could totally see him wearing the same shirt today...heck - even 15 years ago

    3) Marty McFly of 'Back to the Future'

Although he was a teenager and this took place in 1985, Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox) had already begun rocking out the flannels from the waist up. It might have been a few years later, but we can still see him wearing that plaid shirt on October 26th, 2015.

    4) Peter Venkman of 'Ghostbusters'

In 1984's "Ghostbusters," Bill Murray rocked a lot of cool shirts – including this one – as Dr. Peter Venkman, who found himself going back in time to undo Gozer's havoc on Manhattan. But instead of a proton pack, he also needed a red flannel shirt...which would match his colleagues'.

    5) Homer Simpson of 'The Simpsons'

Although he's known for "Doh!"-ing it up, Homer J. Simpson (played by Dan Castellaneta) has been rocking flannels since 1989 on the longest running television show in American history. Even when Bart turned ten years old, dad was still wearing that red shirt!

    6) Paul Woodrugh of 'True Detective Season 1'

After attempting to meet with actress Ashley Suzanne Johnson at a night club, Taylor Kitsch wore this plaid gem in his final scenes in season one of HBO's critically esteemed series "True Detective."

At the time, we didn't know if it was a flashback to his character's past or present...but either way, he wore it well.

    7) Alex P. Keaton of 'Family Ties'

In 1985, when Michael J. Fox took on the role of Alex P. Keaton in "Family Ties," the youngest son of former hippies became a Republican preppy and one of TV's most famous fictional yuppies ever! Even today, you can see him wearing this shirt with pride (and that tie)!

    8) Laurie Forman of 'That 70s Show'

While everyone else in their group rocked out some pretty cool stuff when they were growing up in 1970s Wisconsin, Laurie Forman (played by Lisa Robin Kelly) rocked out some pretty rad flannel shirts...in 2007!

    9) Jack Skellington of 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'

Even the Pumpkin King himself needs to keep it cool with a warm shirt. Although he hasn't changed his clothes since 1993, this look was created for him in Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas."

    10) Michael Kelso of 'That 70s Show'

Like most everyone else on that show, Eric Foreman's best friend wore flannels very well over the years, which is why we love seeing them today! Even when you're just lounging around watching TV with your friends, nothing beats wearing comfy clothes.

It's easy to see that flannel has become one of the coolest things in movies because it keeps you warm, makes you look cool and can last forever.
