1. For starters, you don't need to own a passport to travel into the United States or to visit Puerto Rico. A State-ID of any kind will suffice for either journey.
2. But no, Puerto Rico is not a state. So yes, Puerto Ricans are still culturally Puerto Rican - not American - with Taino, African and Spanish roots.
3. With Latino culture, comes heavenly tasting cuisine.
4. We pretty much invented mofongo.
5. And made the act of adobar or seasoning our food into an actual product.
6. Oh, and of course, PR is known to hold the secret recipe to the special ingredient added to any and every dish: sofrito.
7. Some of our Caribbean neighbors like to colloquially call us “Goya," but what’s not to love about those products?
8. And let's not forget, God’s gift to humankind every holiday season.
9. Which leads me to: Bacardí.
10. Don’t try and tell me that when any salsa song comes on, you don’t feel compelled to shake it like J. Lo.
11. Especially when Suavemente comes on.
12. Sure, lots of Puerto Ricans can’t speak Spanish properly.
13. Which is why we become the butt of all jokes when it comes to speech and pronunciation. You call it annoying, we call it charm.
14. A flight over is less than four hours away and home to some gorgeous scenery.
15. And rainforests.
16. And science.
17. And beaches.
18. And last but certainly not least, this iconic genius has roots from la isla for which we are all eternally grateful.
