Kudu are an African species of antelope. They can grow to weigh over 500 pounds and have horns as long as 72 inches. While they are currently listed as "near threatened," human harvesting and habitat loss are negatively effecting kudu numbers. Kudu are exploited by poachers for their meat and skins, and disease from cattle threatens the species as well. Habitat protection, law enforcement, and other management strategies must be put into practice to ensure the kudu do not become threatened (http://www.iucnredlist.org).

This cat-looking mammal is actually closely related to the mongoose and it is endemic to Madagascar. They can grow to weigh up to 20 pounds, and feed primarily on lemurs and other small to medium sized animals. They are currently listed as "vulnerable" due to the loss of Madagascar's native forest. Fossas often wander into villages in search of poultry, making them a pest to villagers. This often leads to the killing of fossa. Conflicts between human economic goals and wildlife are commonly faced in wildlife management, such as with wolves and ranchers in the United States (Williams et. al, 2002). These cats are found throughout much of Central and South America, and a few even reside as far north as southern Texas. They are carnivores that feed on armadillos, opossums, rabbits, and rodents. Ocelots are of least concern in conservation efforts, but do face challenges due to habitat loss and automobile accidents. Wildlife corridors are pathways for animals to cross between habitat fragments that are separated by train tracks, roads, or other man-made obstructions. Tapirs are found in South America, Central America, and Southeastern Asia. Although they may resemble a pig, the closest relative to tapirs are odd-toed ungulates (horses and rhinos). They are herbivorous and feed on fruit, berries, and leaves. They have been observed eating as much as 85 pounds of vegetation in one day! Tapirs are currently listed as "endangered," largely due to the construction of roads throughout their habitat. Roads increase the amount of edge habitat, which consequently depletes the amount of remaining core habitat of an environment. Edge effects can negatively impact the success of wildlife species. This rabbit-resembling rodent is endemic to Argentina. Endemic species are those that are restricted to a specific geographic region. They feed primarily on green vegetation and fruit, and are well adapted to a cursorial lifestyle. Their current status is "near threatened" due to habitat alteration and the desire to use their skins for bedspreads and rugs. Research has shown that the Patagonia Mara and Chacoan Cavy utilize niche partitioning to allow for their coexistence (Chillo et. al, 2010). Niche partitioning is the process of different species using the same environment in different ways to reduce competition. Niche partitioning is a key driver in the evolution of biodiversity. Understanding the niche that organisms occupy in ecosystems is a critical part of conservation and management as well (http://www.iucnredlist.org).

Saiga are a critically endangered species of antelope that are only found in Kazakhstan and Kalmykia (Russia). They live in large herds of up to a thousand members, and migrate great distances between their summer and winter ranges. A prominent feature of saiga is their nostrils, which are wide, closely paired, and point downward. They are critically endangered due to illegal hunting for their horns and meat. Research has also shown that a skewed sex ratio is a cause for population declines (Milner-Gulland et al. 2003). The proportion of male saiga currently varies between 1-10%, largely due to harvesting of horns. Sex ratios must be considered when managing wild populations. In the case of the saiga, action must be taken to protect young, male saiga (http://www.iucnredlist.org).

Genets are cat-like carnivores that feed on other small mammals, birds, insects, and fruit. There is a high degree of intraspecific variation within the species, resulting in many different subspecies. They are highly agile with quick reflexes and excellent climbing skills. Genets are common pets and have proven themselves to be very social. Very little is known about the current Ethiopian genet populations, ecology, distribution, and habitat. This makes the conservation status of the species very unclear. Further survey work is needed to gain a better understanding of the species. Sufficient data is needed before conservation and management efforts can be put into action (http://www.iucnredlist.org) .
