This Two-Ingredient Egg Dish Is Blowing Up On TikTok, And I Can Confirm It Is *Very* Much Worth The Hype

"This is what I make when I'm starving and need food in five minutes..."

Listen, I love eggs. They are so versatile, you can have them for any meal, and they're a great source of protein. I am always looking for a way to up my egg game, so when I saw this now-viral feta-fried egg recipe on TikTok, I knew I had to make it.

5-minute feta fried eggs: you’ll thank me next time you’re hangry 🍳 Inpired by Ali Slagle’s potato, egg, and cheese tacos 🧀 Heat small nonstick skillet over medium heat. Crumble in feta around perimeter. Crack egg into center; season w/ black pepper & red pepper flakes (no need to add salt, the feta is plenty salty) Cover pan and cook until white is set, yolk is still runny, and cheese is unbelievably crispy. Serve atop toast, w/ hash browns, or my personal fave: in a charred tortilla with avocado & lime. You can oil the skillet, esp. if you’re not using nonstick, but I find the cheese gets crispier w/o More tips on my IG @graceelkus #friedeggs #feta

I have to admit, I was a little hesitant because I have a complicated relationship with the texture of feta cheese, but this looked too dang good to pass up.

Nearing 10 million views, this recipe was created by TikToker Grace Elkus, who specializes in creating high-protein vegetarian recipes. This feta-fried egg requires little prep, is easy to make, and takes only a few minutes to cook. And if I'm being honest, that's really all I needed to hear. Before I knew it, I was on the way to the grocery store.

The ingredients to make the recipe are shown

You might be thinking: feta?! That crumbly stuff?! It's OK, I thought that, too. I connected with Grace, the creator of this recipe, and asked what led her to combine eggs and feta cheese. Grace, who's from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, told BuzzFeed, "I'm a big fan of Ali Slagle's crispy potato, egg, and cheese tacos, which involve frying an egg atop a pile of grated potato and shredded cheddar. At some point, I stopped adding the potato and began playing around with different cheeses. What I love about feta is that you can just crumble it straight into the pan. Plus, it's got all sorts of tangy, salty flavors going on."

Though you can use any feta you can get your hands on, Grace told BuzzFeed that she recommends "buying feta packed in brine or a block of feta rather than crumbles. A block will melt more readily and last longer, too!"

    A block of feta cheese

Alright, so first thing's first, you're going to heat up a non-stick skillet on medium heat. If you don't have a non-stick, go ahead and lightly oil the pan. Otherwise, no oil is needed! If you're using a block of feta, go ahead and crumble that up while the pan is getting hot. When you're ready, spread the feta around the perimeter of the pan. I used around 1/4 cup of cheese!

Once the cheese starts to get a little gooey, go ahead and crack an egg right in the center. Since feta is already pretty salty, you can season your egg with black pepper. If you want a little kick, you can add red pepper flakes as well! To finish cooking, cover the pan with a lid until the egg white is set.

One thing about me is that I love a runny yolk, so after around two minutes, I turned off the heat, put my egg on a plate, and stared at it in complete awe.

The perfect yolk?? The CRISPY FETA CRUST?!?! I'm drooling.

But wait, there's more! Of course, you can totally eat the egg on its own, but I toasted up a tortilla (you can also use bread), put that gorgeous feta-fried egg on top, and then just ate it as is because I wanted to feel out ~the vibes~.

Finally, after the extremely long five minutes it took to make this, it was time for the taste test:

I gave it a 10/10 — and that's just from eating it plain! So of course I had to make it two more times. In Grace's original video, she eats her feta-fried egg on a tortilla with mashed avocado and lime. Though that sounds heavenly, I didn't have any avocados — and that's what makes this recipe so great. "The idea is that it's easy and you can use what you've got on hand," Grace told BuzzFeed. And that's exactly what I did.

In fact, other TikTokers are sharing how they like to add some razzle-dazzle to their feta-fried eggs, and now I have a whole week of meal ideas.
