31 Things That’ll Make It Easier To Effectively Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle

No, we can't buy our way out of the problem, but we can decrease our personal waste with a few strategic swaps.

    1. Reusable Stasher food storage bags so ditching those single-use plastic baggies is easy! These airtight pouches come in a range of sizes and are safe to use in the microwave and freezer. Then just toss 'em in the dishwasher for easy cleaning!

Promising review: "I'm trying very hard to reduce my dependence on plastics that have to be thrown away. I find these reusable silicone 'pouches' just as good as a plastic ziplock bag, but more sustainable. They are easy to clean and disinfect in the dishwasher spread over the prongs so that the water can thoroughly wash them. They'll be a little damp inside when they come out, but just prop them upside down over something so that they can air dry." —KD-D

Get it from Amazon for $9.99+ (available in a variety of sizes and colors).

    2. A beginner-friendly menstrual cup for a one-and-done purchase you'll keep for years that won't fill up your trash or empty your wallet like other period products. Just imagine — no more emergency runs to pick up tampons because your period came early.

    Danielle Healy / BuzzFeed

The thing that freaked me out the most about menstrual cups was the thought of having to get up there and break the seal to take it out. So when I saw the Flex Cup, which is specifically designed to make that process easier, I figured why not give it a try. This is a purchase I would definitely file under the 'life-changing' category. Yes, there is a learning curve, but by my second cycle with the cup I felt like a pro. Even with the pull tab, taking it out can be a little messy (I tend to just do it in the shower), but it's definitely a more controlled experience than if it wasn't there at all. The Flex Cup has made my period less awful. A true feat!

Get it from Amazon for $34.99.

    3. Or a comfortable pair of period underwear that'll make managing your flow as easy (and comfortable) as putting on underwear. These briefs have the ~absorbency powers~ of up to three regular tampons!

    Target, Danielle Healy / BuzzFeed

I feel no real difference between these and my regular Thinx. They're comfy, I've had no leakages (I generally have a light to moderate flow), they wick moisture relatively well, and wash up like a dream. I have two pairs and they've become holy grail staples in my period routine. Combined with my Flex Cup, I now have a zero-waste system that actually makes my entire period experience better than when I was using pads and tampons, which makes me very very happy.

Between each wear, just toss your Thinx in the wash on cold (skip the bleach and softener) then line dry!

Get it from Target for $17 (available in sizes XS–4X and in three colors).

    4. A printed washable sponge to replace the probably-kinda-smelly disposable sponge you're currently using. These work just as well, and can be tossed in the washing machine or dishwasher and reused again and again!

Promising review: "Bought this pad set at the beginning of September because the Swiffer wet pads seemed so wasteful. These have worked great. I usually use a spray cleaner for spot cleaning or a cleaner like Mop-n-Glo and it works really well. Super absorbent and does a great job cleaning the floor. I can use the pad for a few days before it needs to be washed. I’ve been washing them regularly for two months and they’re still fine. No falling apart or Velcro coming off or anything like that. Fully recommend." —Heather B.

Promising review: "I was skeptical, but always hated the waste of plastic brushes. WOW! They have a nice finish, so the wood doesn't 'stick' like you'd expect. The bristles are incredibly soft, as my dentist recommended, and SO fine! It takes less effort to clean between teeth, because the bristles get in deeper, but don't hang up or shed. They are also quite small, like the nicer brand-name brushes so you can reach further back. I will be purchasing these again, and again." —Sarah Gibson

With water, the tabs foam up pretty instantly, and after that, it's just a normal teeth-brushing experience. Now when my sorter gets full it's already right there at the door, ready for me to take to the recycling center! All I have to do is grab my purse, jacket, and keys, and I'm on my way! Getting used to how to place the arc on the wick and understanding that there was a safety timeout took me a bit to get used to but wasn't frustrating." —Salim

I bought one of these cloths after including it in previous posts, subsequently selling myself on it (hazard of the job). a reviewer photo of bread sitting in the bees wax wrap
a reviewer photo of a can with bees wax wrapped covering the top

Beeswax wrap is great! I personally don't use it as a lid for bowls of leftovers (I would rather transfer it to a food storage container), but it's really great if you have half a vegetable left over, or a hunk of cheese you need to wrap up. The heat from your hands softens the wrap and makes it stick to itself like cling wrap, but it's reusable! When you're done just rinse it off with cold water and let it dry.

Get a three-pack from Amazon for $14.99+ (available in four styles).

    19. Plus, a set of five silicone lids with a seemingly endless list of uses that are microwave-, fridge-, and stove-safe. Top off a saucepan, store leftovers, prevent microwave splatters — all without needing to use any single-use plastic wrap or foil.

a reviewer photo of a hand holding holding a tin of cat food with the silicone lid on top

Promising review: "The silicone lids come in different sizes, work well with the microwave, and you can cook with them on the stove. If you have leftover food in a bowl you can cover it up and put in refrigerator. They're easy to wash, easy to store — they stack on top of each other and lay flat. I'm glad I purchased and recommend these silicon bowl lids. It takes the place plastic wrap." —SH

    20. A stainless-steel strainer and saucer set so you can ditch your single-use tea bags (many use plastic sealants and aren't biodegradable) and indulge in an eco-friendly tea time with tasty loose leaf teas.

A reviewer photo of the strainer in a mug filled with black tea
A reviewer photo of a hand holding out the mesh tea strainer on the included saucer

I started drinking more loose leaf tea as a way to cut down on the waste of tea bags (it's also more delicious IMO, which doesn't hurt). I settled on a two-pack of these strainers after another, more cutesy strainer ball left me choking back a mouthful of tea leaves when prepping one of my finer rooibos teas. These have been great for close to five years now. I love that they hook onto the mug and come with a little saucer to set the strainer on when it's finished steeping.
