Why Music Education Is Pretty Good

This is why music education is pretty good, brought to you from O'Hare. My flight leaves in thirty minutes so let's crank this fucker out.

    1. It has been shown to correlate with increases in IQ

Research has shown that students who participate in music classes or lessons have, on average, higher IQs than their non-musical peers.

    2. It improves sound processing

Children who are exposed to music are better listeners, and therefore better learners.

    3. It improves mathematics skills

Because music and mathematics are so interrelated, music students tend to be more proficient in certain areas of math.

    4. It improves social skills and collaboration.

In a test of 4-year olds, participating in a musical activity with a partner improved the likelihood that they would help their partner pick up dropped toys.

    5. Many successful people have been musicians.

Political figures like Condoleezza Rice, and successful business people like the cofounder of Microsoft trained as musicians at some point in their lives.
