From Thanksgiving until Valentine's Day there's an influx in engagements. So if you've already gotten engaged, or if you sense it's coming, take time to prepare for your wedding in a different way- using the principles of Kwanzaa.

In a nutshell, Kwanzaa is a week long celebration that honors African-American heritage and culture. But, anyone can celebrate it! The most popular way to observe Kwanzaa is to use a kinara to light candles each night. Food, music, and dance are also fun elements to incorporate into your Kwanzaa festivities.

This year is like none other, and since we have all been trying new things since March why not try a new cultural observance? From December 26 to January 1 you and your new fiance (or hopeful fiance) can embrace a new idea as you celebrate Kwanzaa and prepare for your upcoming wedding.

Day 1 - Umoja

The first principle of Kwanzaa is UNITY. When you're married you will be blending at least four families. During the first night of Kwanzaa, take time to think of ideas on how to incorporate your families during your wedding, and how you and your future spouse will split holidays with your families in future years.

The second principle of Kwanzaa is SELF-DETERMINATION. When you're married you will become one. However, it's important to still have a sense of self. Use the second day of Kwanzaa to focus on how you and your future spouse can still have individual identities, after the know is tied.

The third principle of Kwanzaa is COLLECTIVE WORK and RESPONSIBILITY. As a married couple, your problems become household problems. While celebrating ujima focus on how you will effectively solve problems within your marriage, or home.

The fourth principle of Kwanzaa is COOPERATIVE ECONOMICS. The fourth day of Kwanzaa is a great time to research local small businesses that would be a good fit for your wedding.

The fifth principle of Kwanzaa is PURPOSE. Use the fifth day of Kwanzaa to determine your purpose- as a spouse, possible future parent, and ultimately contributor to society.

The sixth principle of Kwanzaa is CREATIVITY. Turn the sixth day of Kwanzaa into a really fun one, and think of ways to add a little pizzazz to your wedding.

The seventh principle of Kwanzaa is FAITH. Faith is about believing, and after you're married you will need faith to overcome all challenges that your marriage may face.
