8 Overrated And 8 Underrated Characters On Pretty Little Liars

There are overrated and underrated characters in every series, including PLL. 8 underrated & 8 overrated, in no order.

Overrated: Ezra Fitz

Everyone is so happy Aria and Ezra had a happy ending. Did we forget that he was once her teacher? And did we forget when they originally met he only talked to her because he was spying on her and her friends to write a book about yet ANOTHER underage girl that he dated? Simply to write a book. Two underage girls. Sure, he didn't know about Alison. But he knew with Aria, so why be so angry at Alison if you were going to go and do it again anyway with another girl?

Underrated: Wren Kingston

Sure, the accent helps Wren when it comes to his good looks. However, within the series he plays a huge role that nobody knows until the very end. He was the one that united CeCe and Charlotte because he mistook Alex for Spencer in a bar, started dating anyway, and the rest is history. Charlotte wouldn't have been able to pull off a lot of the elaborate stunts to torture the girls that she did if it weren't for Wren's help at Radley (How did he not lose his license to practice?). He's also the father of Alison and Emily's adorable twin babies. Honestly, Alex may have wanted a family, but she probably would've been happier if she had just stayed with Wren in London instead of seeking revenge. She would've won that way.

Overrated: Toby Cavanaugh

Toby tries to play the hero, especially when he becomes a cop. He's always yelling "I'm a police officer!" as if that's really stopped "A" from attacking someone or doing other horrible things before. Don't get me wrong, he's sweet, but there are things off with him. Why get involved with your step sister? Sure, you're not blood but still, gross. She wouldn't have to blackmail you if you were smart enough to not hook up with her in the first place. What's that about?!

Underrated: Lucas Gottesman

Lucas was pretty much harmless. He was being blackmailed by Mona, so he did some bad things. The rest, he was afraid of being bullied again by Alison, just like Mona was. He tried to build a company with Hanna using all of his own money, expecting nothing in return even after having a giant crush on her for years. He'd watch her be with his best friend and still be friends with her, that's how much he cared about Hanna.

Overrated: Jenna Marshall

People think Jenna's smart because after her surgery she got away with faking still being blind for a while and that she knows who's in the room with her without being able to see them. She knows your voice guys. If one of you is there, typically you all are. Especially when one goes "Hi Jenna..." awkwardly, like every time. She really just made moves against the girls without realizing it half the time. Shana was sent to Rosewood to get information for Alison and they fell in love, hence Shana going out of her way to try and kill Alison and the people around her. Then the next time she was helping "A.D." she was just scared and being threatened. She really is just a character that you figure out early on will never really be "A", she just has a lot of motives to be.

Underrate: Mona Vanderwaal

Mona really just wanted to be liked. Just like Hanna did. Hanna was just lucky(?) Alison let her into her inner circle so she was in with the popular kids. Mona tried to talk to them and they all ignored her or laughed at her. Even when Alison disappeared they still avoided her and made snide remarks to her, why? Who knows. Then when Mona helps them solve who the next "A" is, they still don't include her in the group. She's the smart one, not Spencer. They should've realized that after she admitted she was original "A", duh!

Overrated: Wesley Fitzgerald

A lot of people liked Wes because he was Ezra's younger brother and somewhat of a bad boy. He literally kissed Aria, his brothers girlfriend, while he was staying in his apartment to get away from his "shitty" life at home. He acted like an Ezra 2.0 only there's huge doubts about whether he actually was able to make it on his own.

Underrated: Charlotte Drake

Charlotte is someone most people hate to see as underrated. Heres why: she grew up in a mental hospital, taught herself, taught herself so well that she got into UPenn, oh, and did I mention built an underground bunker? She knew how to hack everything and anything she got her hands and she was self taught. She also did all this while struggling with her (adopted) father not accepting her and putting her into a mental institution. She manipulated everyone to get what she wanted. She manipulated her way out of the second mental hospital she was in and was going to start the game AGAIN, until Mona killed her. Sidenote: why would Mary let Jessica adopt the Charlotte in the first place after the hell she put her through? Why not just call Ted up and tell him he's going to be a father? She clearly found him many years later, she could've found him then. This whole mess wouldn't have even happened!

Overrated: Alex Drake

You thought Charlotte was messed up? What she did to Alison and Emily was beyond sick! Sure it could've been "Elliott Rollins" that did it, but A.D. was sending the messages. She thought it was perfectly fine. She came into the series way too late. It was an hour and a half episode that she was actually seen in. At least that's when we discovered for sure who she was. Evil twin? And how didn't anyone else figure out that Mary had twins inside her, was Peter even interested in ultrasounds, meeting with doctors, the stuff a normal dad does? Oh wait...nevermind. It's Peter Hastings we're talking about. And the twin angle totally comes from the books, I get it, but having it happen so late in the series just makes it seem random and not thought out. She definitely didn't have a real personality, just a storyline, because she didn't need one. She was only in the finale!

Underrated: Mike Montgomery

Mike was the annoying little brother at the beginning of the series then he transformed into a bad boy when his parents separated. After a while he started getting better and in group therapy at school started talking to Mona. Odd combo, I know. They were adorable though! We saw his soft side and how caring he was. But where did he go?! I know the actor had other obligations but still. At least keep us updated. I was rooting for him and Mona! He may not have been in a whole lot of storylines, but when he was they were interesting. Even if they didn't have to do with A. The writers missed an opportunity with him.

Overrated: Noel Kahn

Noel was the hot guy every girl wanted. The blame always seemed to come back to him in different ways. He was always involved in small ways. Helping Ali and "CeCe" in New York, helping Charlotte in the dollhouse, helping Alex. Half the time the girls suspected him, he wasn't involved. Then you never guessed it the times that he was! It was pretty sick what he did to Spencer in the dollhouse, but really, he was always a pawn. The only real memorable thing about him was the fight in the blind school, where his death occurred. And it wasn't even confirmed if he was working for Alex or not or why he was helping Jenna! Not that interesting. Just another character to have as a red herring when needed.

Underrated: Wayne Fields

The writers did him dirty. Literally the only normal father in Rosewood. Why kill him off towards the end?! Emily could've messed her life up with some other life altering event, or like normal people her age, simple things like school being too much to handle. Sure, we didn't see much of Mr. Fields, but what we saw was enough to show you he was one of the most normal dads and probably one of the most caring and normal adults in the entire series! R.I.P.

Overrated: Melissa Hastings

Melissa was always the suspect of every single thing the liars were investigating, even if it never made sense. Half the time she was out of the country. They would use it as a motive at times, when really, she was always in and out of Rosewood. If I had a family like hers, I would be too. Spencer should've followed her lead. But she was barely in the series, most of the things she was guilty of were petty (Except burying Bethany alive), but hey. At least she did it out of love. But really, what else DID she do that was relevant? Nothing.

Underrated: Mary Drake

Mary Drake is a character that a lot of people can't figure out, which is what makes her so underrated. She is so complex because of her family and the life she's lived. Her sister put the blame of a baby dying on her watch on to Mary and put her in Radley for years, issued electric shock therapy, and told her that her son was dead! She had 3 kids while she was in a mental hospital and then, ironically, 2 of them end up back in the same mental institution! She was almost killed by her sister with the help of the father of 2 of her children, so she ended up killing her. She takes the blame for Archer Dunhill's murder for Spencer and her friends. Then busts out of jail only to help her other daughter (news to her, she's alive and finds her) capture Spencer. She proceeds to get locked up again, only in a dollhouse and controlled by Mona. She's one of the most interesting characters on the show. Even if she's done some noble things and some horrible things, she's memorable.

Overrated: Spencer Hastings

Hear me out. Everyone considers her the smart one yet, somehow, she manages to get herself into the worst predicaments. I know what you're going to say. Her crazy family situation is the root of all of this. No, half of her poor decisions didn't have to do with that. Like oh, I don't know, kidnapping a child? She can also never be alone. I mean, how many times did she cheat on Toby? One was even a guy she had known for one day while staying in London! She was still with him even if they had to avoid being seen together when he became a cop. Even other times they would break up she'd move right onto another guy. This happened when Spencer broke up with Toby, ran from the car, Wren snatched her up like a bird with a broken wing, and they kissed in the same day! But you were so upset about breaking up, weren't you Spencer?

Underrated: Emily Fields

The girl had a "dead" girlfriend, a girlfriend who legitimately got murdered, a girlfriend that tried to drown her, and a girlfriend who helped torture her for years and somehow made it through high school to finally get married and have her happily ever after (we're not including the spin off: Marlene King said that they were getting back together at some point anyway). She tore her shoulder trying to save Mona, a girl who tortured her for at least a year, from getting hit by a car, which caused her to lose her chance at a swimming scholarship. This girl did everything she could for everyone else, no matter the cost to herself.
