LUSH Cosmetics Aims To Save Our Oceans With Their Latest 'Shark Fin' Campaign

Sharks are not the enemy!

Canadian filmmaker and conservationist Rob Stewart passed away on a dive back in January.

Known for his groundbreaking work in shark conservation, Stewart exposed the world to inhumane shark slaughter practices in the 2007 documentary Sharkwater. With a deep focus on exploitation and corruption, Stewart made it his mission to highlight dwindling shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

Every year, up to 100 million sharks are killed for shark fin soup and other commodities.

Despite the tragic loss, Sharkwater 2 has gotten the greenlight to be completed in honor of Stewart.

Titled 'Sharkwater: Extinction,' the new documentary is expected to expose the shocking ways sharks are used in daily consumer products, including lipstick, moisturizer, pet food, livestock feed, fertilizer and even fast food sandwiches – often renamed “flake,” “white fish” and “rock salmon.”

As an ethical and environmentally-friendly cosmetics company, LUSH has made moves to support Stewart's efforts.

And this isn't the first time LUSH Cosmetics has involved themselves with Stewart and conservation efforts. In 2014 and 2015, LUSH collaborated with Stewart, United Conservationists, Fin Free and Discovery Channel to promote shark conservation during Shark Week. It was then that the Shark Fin Soap debuted and raised $100,000 and $250,000 respectively to support United Conservationists' work. LUSH also collected thousands of signatures for a petition to ban the shark fin trade in North America.

Sharks have existed longer than than trees and human life itself. For the last 400 million years, sharks shaped the world by keeping aquatic life in check. According to research from SharkSider.com, the Earth as we know it could fall out of balance if sharks become extinct. Coral reefs would disappear, oceans could suffocate from depleted oxygen levels, along with mass marine extinction, increased global warming, destroyed world economies and diseases left uncured.

It's unclear whether LUSH has influenced shark-friendly legislation in North America, but progress is being made.

In Toronto, the City Council passed a motion in support of banning shark fin imports for all of Canada back in April. Meanwhile in the U.S., Congress introduced a shark fin trade ban bill in 2016, but is currently in deliberations. Whether or not this Shark Fin campaign is responsible for these legislative moves, it's impressive that LUSH has empowered their consumers with small ways to save the world.
