TBT: The Bachelor Season 1 Episode 4

    Hometowns & Heartbreaks

This week Alex visits the remaining four women in their hometowns to meet their family and friends. #TBT

We start with Chris Harrison visiting the remaining women in the Bachelor Mansion. He explains that from this point forward they won't see each other at all outside of rose ceremonies. The women begin packing to head to their respective hometowns. Trista is still unsure of whether she even likes this guy she's about to introduce to her family as her possible husband. Shannon says she "doesn't like sharing" when it comes to dating and sounds genuinely pissed as though she didn't sign up to be here and was never explained the concept of a dating show.

The first hometown is Kim's in Arizona. Kim and Alex have never been on a one on one date but he stresses that he thinks she's really hot to the camera. That's good just tell her parents that and you're in!

As they ride in a limo to Kim's family home he asks her what she likes to do in her free time probably because he literally knows nothing about her if her family asks. Kim says that she likes to read in her bed and follows that up with "I don't really like fiction or nonfiction" like a true bookworm. She says she's really into Dr. Phil who Alex has never heard of which means he's either a hermit or a time traveler. Kim seems cool with either option and continues to tell him about her passion for self help books about how to make men fall in love with you.

Kim's family greets them and quickly takes Alex to a room filled with taxidermy. Great ice breaker. Surrounded by dead animals Alex is asked what his hobbies are and he says he loves swimming and reading. Feeling the eyes of Kim's dad and an entire family of deer on him he says he should probably add hunting to his list of interests.

Everyone seems to get along pretty well and the meeting ends with Alex asking Kim's family what the best things about her are. Kim starts to cry after her mom says that people should "call her chocolate because she's so sweet." This moment + the taxidermy room would be enough for me to tell Kim not to bother coming to the rose ceremony. At the end of the night Kim walks Alex to his car and tells him to say hi to Trista for her. Romance.

Next up is Trista's hometown. She starts the day off by taking Alex to her high school and showing him her old stomping grounds. Alex mentions for the one hundredth time that he can't tell if Trista is into him. They sit in the bleachers on the football field and talk about how they both really loved high school, a refreshing take from two hot athletes.

At Trista's family home everyone is in good spirits and Alex notes that they seem to make Trista relax a little. Her mom asks her if Alex is a good kisser and asks Alex the same of her daughter. She says that the two most important things in a partner are good conversation and good kissing. She's not wrong.

Trista's best friends and one of their husbands join everyone for dinner. I think we might have a Love Actually situation on our hands when her friend's husband showers Trista with praises while looking very seriously into the camera. Dinner is filled with laughter and the night ends with Trista's mom requesting that Alex and Trista kiss for them all before they leave.

In the limo Trista is laying in Alex's lap while telling him that she probably would have never picked him out of a crowd in real life. Just the type of thing you want to hear from the person you're considering spending the rest of your life with! Alex pleads with her to bring down her walls and act as though they are in an exclusive relationship so they can really get to know each other. Trista says she can't do that because then she would feel like he was cheating on her.

The third hometown visit is in Kansas to meet Amanda's family. She lives in a very tiny town and is concerned it won't seem cool to the cosmopolitan Alex. Lucky for her he is so tired he can barely hold a conversation with her parents and surely didn't notice the general store.

Later that night Amanda's brothers and her best friend join the family for dinner. The oldest brother grills Alex about himself and the process of the show. Big Brother asks if Alex went to college in Texas. When Alex says he went to Harvard everyone looks at him as though he just spit on their food. Basically I'm scared for Alex's life during this whole hometown date but it ends with Amanda saying that her family thinks Alex is "perfect for her." I'm never going to Kansas.

Finally Alex travels to Texas to meet Shannon's family. He meets her parents, sister, niece and dog. They're not sitting down to talk more than 30 seconds when Shannon ditches Alex alone with her parents to go hangout with her dog. Shannon's mom realizes that this is rude and goes to grab her but she goes outside to play with the dog. Eventually she brings Alex with her on a dog walk. They sit down on a bench and he tries to have a conversation with her but she keeps getting distracted by the dog. I'm pretty sure she is in love with her dog and that's the real reason she doesn't kiss humans on the first date.

That night Alex and Shannon are riding around in the limo and Alex decides that he needs to understand what these "rules" Shannon has said she lives by are. He knows that she doesn't kiss on the first date and that she says she lives by rules to be a "good girl" but wants to ensure he c̶a̶n̶ ̶g̶e̶t̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶s̶l̶e̶e̶p̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶h̶i̶m̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶f̶a̶n̶t̶a̶s̶y̶ ̶s̶u̶i̶t̶e̶ really understands. Wrong move dude. Shannon is PISSED that he would dare to bring this up. She says "this isn't a game" and that marriage is "freaking forever" which seem like reasons you would want to be on the same page about any rules pre proposal but, sure gal.

The women are reunited for the rose ceremony. Shannon is wearing an amazing thick choker that's probably covering up hickies from her dog. All four of the women recorded video messages for Alex right after he left their hometown dates. In a genius move Kim says she would love to spend a long night together. I'm not actually sure whether the women know that the fantasy suite dates are a thing yet or not but either way she's in it to win it. Shannon says that there are a few subjects that she's "just not ready to go there yet." I've got news, he's planning on sleeping with you next episode and proposing the one after that so, better get ready Shan!

Alex chooses Trista, Shannon and Amanda in that order. A voiceover explains that he didn't keep Kim because of how much emphasis her family kept putting on how laid back she is. I'm sure that was a fun scene to watch as a family!

Come back next week to see Shannon probably punch Alex in the face for inviting her to spend the night with him!
