To all the dessert people out there who hate baking: This one's for you.
And make sure you're sifting your powdered sugar to get rid of any lumps!
I also originally used 1 cup of cocoa powder in these photos which made it kind of difficult to mix by hand. So if you choose to do any more than 1/2 cup, don't be a hero — let your stand mixer or electric beaters do the work for you.
I don't want to hear any jokes about how this looks, okay??
Personally, I don't really care if mine is a perfectly round circle. Plus, every time I've been served chocolate salami, it's had a flat bottom and been more semi-circle shaped.
I admittedly made this one a little too long, but it really doesn't have to be perfect — the beauty of this dessert is that it's no-fuss and doesn't need to look pretty.
Whenever my mom makes this — and most of the Portuguese chocolate salamis I've seen — she actually uses granulated sugar to coat it, which I admittedly like more since it adds an additional layer of crunch. But if you're really trying to push the salami bit, powdered sugar is the way to go. Some recipes will even call for wrapping it in string, but I say save that effort for the holidays, not a summer weeknight when you're craving something quick.
I know this may seem like kind of a bizarre dessert to some — when you think about it, it really is a log of chocolate butter — but I love how easy, fudgy, and texturally interesting it is. I'm also a big believer that dessert doesn't always have to be a big production where you use multiple bowls and sweat over an oven; sometimes it can just be a few simple ingredients you throw together when you have 10 minutes to spare.
