Keep Your Eyes On The Road With A Heads-Up Windshield Display

Cell phone use while driving results in 1.6 million crashes per year and is considered six times more dangerous than drunk driving. It takes only an average of three seconds for a driver’s mind to be taken off the road and for a road accident to occur. While some of this is due to texting, using applications for navigation leads to distraction, as well. Newer sports cars, such as the Corvette Z06 and Volvo S90 have the latest HUD technology, but one startup called Hudway Glass has created a device to bring a windshield head-up display to any car with a simple mount for $50. The company’s first product is an augmented-reality app that projects driving directions onto windshields for low-visibility conditions, especially at night, fog, snow or heavy rain. The turn by turn directions work with Google, Apple or OpenStreet maps. In March of 2015, the company released the glass product which is affixed to the dashboard in the drivers’ line of sight and a semi-transparent glass that reflects navigation information off of drivers’ cell phones display or screen and allows to see the road clearly.

    Product History:

In fall of 2015, Hudway Glass held a successful Kickstarter campaign raising over $600,000 from approximately 9,000 backers resulting in 11,000 units shipped. The following year, in 2016, the company began to sell the product in retail stores. While some reviews have been mixed, the price is quite low for this level of technology at $50 per unit – and anything that keeps a driver’s eyes on the road is a valiant effort in and of itself.
