All Of “The Umbrella Academy” Episode Intros Ranked From Pretty Creative To Utterly Brilliant
WARNING: Contains umbrellas and spoilers.
Season 1, Episode 1, "We Only See Each Other At Weddings and Funerals"
WHAT HAPPENS: In the first episode, when Vanya arrives at the academy, the show's title pops up in a very chill, not-particularly-exciting way. Trust me though, this is the only basic title card of the season, which is why it's ranked last. WORST PART: Even the font is like Times New Roman levels of meh.
BEST PART: The fact that this glorious series is truly beginning in this moment.
Season 1, Episode 7, "The Day That Was"
WHAT HAPPENS: After Leonard Peabody goes dumpster diving to find Reginald's notebook, the show's title appears on one of the pages. WORST PART: Garbage-ass Leonard Peabody.
BEST PART: Garbage-ass Leonard Peabody being in a dumpster.
Season 1, Episode 5, "Number Five"
WHAT HAPPENS: A much older Number Five is living on the post-apocalyptic Earth, when he spots The Handler in the distance. A tin lunchbox behind him displays the show's title. WORST PART: That sweet tin lunchbox isn't available for purchase IRL.
BEST PART: Old Number Five's blinking eyes/shocked-face.
Season 1, Episode 10, "The White Violin"
WHAT HAPPENS: When Reginald Hargreeves discovers the umbrella store for sale, he enters and pops open an umbrella that reveals the show's title. WORST PART: The previous episode ends with Vanya going nuts and her eyes glowing blue, so it's just like, wrap your shenanigans up so we can get to the good stuff, Reginald.
BEST PART: This is the only chill scene of the episode — the final moments of peace before the stressful rollercoaster takes off.
Season 1, Episode 8, "I Heard A Rumor"
WHAT HAPPENS: When Allison is driving to search for Vanya, she speeds past a billboard that displays the show's title. WORST PART: Those mustaches the dudes on the billboard are rocking.
BEST PART: Allison steps on the gas and the car speeds up which is fitting because it feels like things are about to escalate (which they most certainly did).
Season 1, Episode 3, "Extra Ordinary"
WHAT HAPPENS: From Vanya's music class, the camera pans outside and down below a group of people walking in the rain pop open umbrellas, one of which displays the show's title. WORST PART: It was raining hard, these people should've already had their umbrellas open.
BEST PART: It was my favorite scene involving a bunch of people holding umbrellas since this one from . How I Met Your Mother
Season 1, Episode 2, "Run Boy Run"
WHAT HAPPENS: After Number Five gets lost while time traveling and arrives in post-apocalyptic times, an umbrella dramatically swoops through the burning rubble to display the show's title. WORST PART: The fact that we don't get to see more of Number Five in the future — I could honestly watch an entire series of that.
BEST PART: THE SUPER EPIC, VERY DOPE SONG PLAYING DURING THIS SCENE (It's called ). Run Boy Run by Woodkid
Season 1, Episode 9, "Changes"
WHAT HAPPENS: After young Vanya is persuaded to eat her oatmeal by Grace, she lifts her bowl to her face revealing the show's title. WORST PART: I hated oatmeal as a kid so I felt bad that Vanya had a robot pressuring her to eat it.
BEST PART: The thought that sooner than later, a bowl with this design will be available on Etsy.
Season 1, Episode 4, "Man on the Moon"
WHAT HAPPENS: After Luther is injected with a mysterious serum and wakes up big and hairy, a jack-in-the-box cranks open revealing a toy monkey that holds an umbrella displaying the show's title. WORST PART: The box is just being cranked even though nobody's touching it which is kind of random but whatever, I can roll with it.
BEST PART: Luther's horrified scream in-between the monkey popping out and the monkey's umbrella being fully displayed.
Season 1, Episode 6, "The Day That Wasn't"
WHAT HAPPENS: After Luther reveals that Number Five told him they all die in the near future, an umbrella falls to the ground and pops open to reveal the show's title. WORST PART: The fact that you can't hear GIFs, because Klaus lets out a hilarious little scream when the umbrella drops.
BEST PART: The quick, subtle zoom into the umbrella that makes the moment just a little bit more dramatic. TV and Movies
