12 'Unpopular' 80s Movies Opinions To Tell Your Parents

1. The political incorrectness in Sixteen Candles can be overlooked.

In a time where being politically correct was non-existent, it's no wonder that one of our favourite teenage movies has a lot of questionable moments. Personally, the low-key assault and offensive racial slurs add to the realism of John Hughes' ideas but also the nature of the 80s with these themes lying just around the corner.

2. Johnny and Baby were problematic.

One of the best summer romance movies of all time sees two characters who really shouldn't have become one of cour greatest ships become our greatest ship! Let's face it, the look that Baby gave Billy when she helped carry the bags was a sign of a true romance and Johnny and Penny's trust and partnership was obviously beyond perfection. BIG mistake. HUGE.

3. Dream a Little Dream's main plot is unbearable.

I watch this movie for Dinger, period.

4. Back to the Future Part II is the best of the trilogy.

I can ignore the Jennifer switch that they tried to fool me with because it's the only time the title actually makes sense. We actually see the future! Plus, the Halloween props we can use from this movie alone is *chef kiss*.

5. Nancy Thompson was sooo annoying.

Was it her weird pouty pace, the fact she was going with the gorgeous Johnny Depp or her lazy run? Guess we'll never know...

6. Bender is the most important character in TBC.

Despite being major eye candy for the movie's appeal, if it weren't for Bender each character would be going home from detention as the same person with the same ideas. He is basically Jesus of the Problematic Teens is what I'm saying.

7. Blane is a pain.

No, it's not because I was rooting for nice guy Duckie or for rich sleaze Steff's redemption, it's because he was a genuinely boring love interest with only computer skills and the ability to say 'I love you' to sweep Andie off her feet. Really...?

8. Just One of the Guys deserves more.

An underrated teen comedy that has a hot guy and a hot girl and guess what? They're both the same person! It's cliché, funny, dirty and so 80s. What more could you as for? The movie makes you smile all the way through especially when that fine brother comes in and also touches on themes such as homophobia and sexism with grace. Check it out.

9. And so is Some Kind Of Wonderful!

Not every John Hughes movie got as much attention as the hits did including Some Kind Of Wonderful in '87. Maybe it's not as bright and bold as the others but the movie is a great representation of youth trying to discover themselves and their true desires and overcoming obstacles of social class and superiority.

10. We don't realise how weird Heathers actually is.

Don't get me wrong, I think the movie is genius but I think how dark some of the dark humour in the movie is, is incredibly overlooked. I mean does Veronica actually get away with being an accomplice of JD's in all the murders just because she's pals with Martha, chooses to skip prom and now wears a scrunchie? What was the purpose of Jason and his father's role reversal? Why did Veronica change her mind? I need answers and not through Riverdale people!

11. Footloose is inferior to the remake and has aged badly.

Now before you get your dancing shoes out to hit me, many have disagreed with me on this and I recognise both movies as great movies. However, I think the character development, soundtrack, character development and casting of the remake is too good to ignore. Frankly, the '84 classic to me is unmemorable with ideas that were safe for Hollywood and innocent. Give me the dirt.

12. And finally, Say Anything is overrated.

John Cusack has been done so dirty over time, being given really lacking characters that don't really let him fulfil his potential, at least in the 80s. I like it but I don't think it really deserves the status it receives over and over again. I also believe that a movie can't be saved with just one iconic scene with a guy playing music out of a boombox. Not for me.
