    Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief

Puerto Rico is an American territory in the Caribbean. As a result of American colonialism, Puerto Rico was forced to file for bankruptcy in May, and currently has an unemployment rate of 45%. Prior to this years hurricane season, their disaster relief fund held only $15 million. Puerto Rico has a population of 3.5 million Americans; the approximate equivalent of Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota and South Dakota combined. 100% of the island is without power, and it likely won't be restored until 2018. 44% of Puerto Ricans still don't have access to drinking water, and necessities like food and fuel are running low. This is a humanitarian crisis, and Puerto Rico needs our help. Please consider donating to the organizations below. $5 adds up!

    Hurricane Maria Community Recovery Fund

The devastating effects of hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico are still unfolding, but one thing is certain—the island's most vulnerable communities are likely to be pummeled the hardest and face the longest road to recovery.

Low-income communities of color often face the worst destruction and slowest recovery and have fewer resources to safeguard homes, vehicles, and other property. When the winds die down and the floods recede, these communities are often forgotten by reconstruction efforts, and underserved by insurance companies.

The Hurricane Maria Community Relief & Recovery Fund will be housed at the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD). One hundred percent of monies raised will be used to support immediate relief, recovery, and equitable rebuilding in Puerto Rico for the communities hit hardest by the storm. The Fund is governed by organizations like Puerto Rico-based Taller Salud and other local, grassroots organizations. The Fund will support organizations working with these hardest hit communities in Puerto Rico.

"Unidos": A Hurricane Relief Fund for Hurricane Maria Victims in Puerto Rico

The fund will be managed by the Hispanic Federation, a leading Latino nonprofit organization with more than 25 years of experience in providing disaster-relief assistance to Latinos in the United States and Latin America. One hundred percent of the proceeds will help hurricane victims and the recovery efforts through fellow community and civic organizations in Puerto Rico.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Maria’s destruction has been simultaneously joined with the devastation of a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Mexico City which has left an estimated 230 killed and more than 800 injured. In solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Mexico, the Federation and Latino civic leadership pledges to establish a $50,000 fund to help support those impacted by this tragedy. To make a donation people can go online, send a text message or visit any branch of Popular Community Bank.
