Chatham University is the fourth name that the college on Woodland Road has possessed. It was founded as the Pennsylvania Female College in 1869, then, at the petition of the student body, became Pennsylvania College for Women in 1890. In 1955, it underwent a name change again to Chatham College, as a tribute to William Pitt, namesake of Pittsburgh, PA and the former Earl of Chatham. Finally, in 2007, it became Chatham University.
