This list of cryptocurrencies will have you scratching your head! Who invented them? Why were they created? What makes them special? And most importantly...WHY DO THEY HAVE SUCH RIDICULOUS NAMES?!?

1. DogeCoin

Starting out as a joke cryptocurrency back in 2013 this coin has actually seen some real-world success. This coin derives its name from the "Doge" internet meme....Wow....Such money....Very meme....

The coin was invented by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer to be more widespread than Bitcoin and to distance itself from the controversy of other coins. Palmer purchased the dogecoin.com domain and the rest is history.

Dogecoin owners have donated dogecoins to send the Jamaican bobsled team to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, sponsor NASCAR driver Josh Wise (the car bore the Shiba Inu mascot logo), and even raised over $30,000 for charity for clean water in Kenya.

2. KodakCoin

KodakCoin has many analysts, enthusiasts, and standers-by scratching their heads. What the HELL does Kodak need a cryptocurrency for? Well, according to Kodak, the blockchain technology for this coin will give photographers a copyright management system for their work. Uh...OK.....

Well shares of Kodak SKYROCKETED with the news going from around $3 to nearly $12!!!! The cryptocurrency currently isn't available to the public so not much is known about the coin right now.

3. FonzieCoin

AAAAAAAYYYY!!

Yep. The Fonz has his own coin which was created on March 7th, 2015. In a FAQ about the Happy Days' character's cryptocurrency the creator, when asked why the coin was created, said very bluntly, "Because Fonzie is cool." Hey, can't argue with that logic.

During a time of extreme hype in cryptocurrency I think the creation of this coin has signaled to the market that we may have jumped the shark...

4. Garlicoin

For you garlic bread enthusiasts out there there is a cryptocurrency just for you!

Garlicoin is the creation of Reddit user DigitalizedOrange on December 25th, 2017. The reddit post was titled, "If this post gets 30,000 upvotes, I will make a garlic bread cryptocurrency called garlicoin."

The digital currency boasts that it offers nothing that other coins don't already do. From their website, "Hot out of the oven, and with a boast of features identical to and present in countless other cryptocurrencies."

From the subreddit /r/garlicoin: "This is the coin you never thought you needed, and you probably don't."

5. TrumpCoin

Information about this digital currency is scarce, but you can indeed buy it on some exchanges. Per the official Trumpcoin website, "TrumpCoin is a digital currency that is based on Bitcoin. It was created on February 20, 2016, in order to honor Donald J. Trump and to help him secure the Presidency of the United States."

If you're upset about Trump in the Oval office you can blame the creators of Trumpcoin.

6. Theresa May Coin

Theresa May Coin (just rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it?) is even more esoteric than Trumpcoin. The coin was mined into existence on April 20th, 2017.

I mean, who doesn't want a digital currency of their favorite British Prime Minister in their investment portfolio?!?

7. PutinCoin

Listen - I get it if Theresa May Coin and Trumpcoin aren't the cryptocurrencies you want to invest in, but at least give PutinCoin a chance!!!

That's right. The infamous Russian despot has a cryptocurrency named after him. Per the whitepaper, "The Putin coin is a cryptocurrency coin created to pay tribute to the people and the president of Russia."

Surprisingly, at the time of this article the coin has a market capitalization of almost $4,000,000.

8. Mao Zedong Coin

Mao Zedong coin apparently draws inspiration from PutinCoin. The creator, named dimecoinfan on bitcointalk.org, posted this gem when the coin was announced, "Putin (coin), however, is a slight influence. One difference, the real MAO would have wiped the floor with the real Putin." Unfortunately, the market cap of Mao Zedong Coin is about one tenth the market cap of PutinCoin.

But look out, the roadmap for this coin includes world domination! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

9. BillaryCoin

One more "political" cryptocurrency and we're moving on to stranger coins. This one is called BillaryCoin. The name of the coin is just a portmanteau of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The official website is a sight to behold: it's highly polished and yet clearly tongue-in-cheek. Per the website, "The BLRY team is the original power couple and represents the strongest bond known to science. We have all the bases covered, I'm an alcoholic womanizing fat guy, and my partner in coin is a young ambitious PhD. Together we form a kind of sickly Voltron, but with boobs."

Nothing ages as well as a cryptocurrency named after a former president and his wife who ran unsuccessfully in two different elections...
