You Know Your A Filmmaker When...

things that happen to all filmmakers or things you'll identify with as a filmmaker

When it comes to being a filmmaker, the way you see life differs from the rest of the world. Your lingo changes for starters, but the way you do life changes too.

Filmmakers watch movies differently. Filmmakers eat food differently. Filmmakers consume a different level of caffeine.

We view the world with different eyes, and I can’t help but laugh at the things we say.

Welcome to the first edition of “You know you’re a filmmaker when…”

You know you’re a filmmaker when, people can’t take what you say seriously, “Yeah I slit his throat.” Or, “Go ahead and strike the baby.”

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you ask for a half apple and that doesn’t have anything to do with the fruit.

You know you’re a filmmaker when, sleep becomes something you rarely experience.

You know you’re a filmmaker when, the lovely sound of rain becomes something you hate, because it’s ruining your sound.

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you can’t switch your brain off while watching other movies. “How did they do that shot?” or, “Why did they use a dutch tilt for this scene?”

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you repeat everything someone says, because once upon a time you were an A.D. “Quiet on set!”

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you have a love/hate relationship with batteries. Inevitably, there was a time when everything was ready to roll and the camera battery died.

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you don’t want to stay hydrated. You don’t have time to go to the toilet or because you don’t want to have to tell the A.D. you’re going 10-2!

You know you’re a filmmaker when, someone says they’ll meet you at the circus! They aren’t talking about the place with clowns or elephants.

You know you’re a filmmaker when “No” isn’t an option. You’ve got to find a solution no matter what.

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you go to someone’s house and think “I want to shoot something here.”

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you see someone else filming something in the city, and you check out their camera to see if it’s as cool as yours.

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you never know where you’re going to be on any given day, because you’re filming in so many different locations.

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you finish principal photography and go through withdrawals and don’t know what to do with all your “spare time.”

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you forget how to have a normal conversation without your walkie. “Go for Charis!”

You know you’re a filmmaker when, stepping on a scorpion is just one of those things you do to keep your lead actor safe.

You know you’re a filmmaker when, your workout consists of lifting sandbags between takes. I mean come on, those things are better than weights!

You know you’re a filmmaker when, every person you meet becomes a potential contact. “Oh you own a restaurant down town? Awesome. Can we shoot there sometime?”

You know you’re a filmmaker when, your crew become like a quirky family. There are no secrets, and everyone has seen you at your best and your worst.

You know you’re a filmmaker when, you wake up in the morning and wonder why you’re doing this crazy thing with your life, but then at the wrap party for production, you see a simple trailer of the footage and get goosebumps.
