People Are Tweeting About Getting IUDs While They're Still Covered

As more states were called for Donald Trump last night, one piece of advice started popping up on Twitter: Get an IUD. Fast.

While it's not yet certain how contraceptive access and affordability will change under Trump, he has said he plans to "completely repeal Obamacare."

So, with uncertainty about what birth control access and affordability will look like under Trump, lots of people seem eager to lock in a long-term birth control option while it's still covered.

Others tweeted that long-term birth control might be particularly important if access to safe and legal abortion becomes even more restricted.

Under the Affordable Care Act, all methods of FDA-approved birth control are covered without a co-pay if you have insurance. That includes costly, long-acting options like the IUD (intrauterine device) or implant.

There are two main types of IUDs: hormonal and copper. The hormonal IUD contains the hormone levonorgestrel and can stay in up to three or five years, depending on the brand. The copper IUD is hormone-free and can stay in for up to 10 years.

Another long-term, reversible option is the hormonal implant.

The birth control implant is inserted in the upper arm and releases the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy up for up to three years.

So if you're worried about not being able to afford birth control if the Affordable Care Act is repealed, getting an IUD or implant before that happens would essentially ensure that you have free birth control for as long as that method lasts.
