13 Unusual White House Petitions That Are Borderline Genius

Americans have sent some crazy and totally awesome petitions to the White House. Another absurdity? The random age requirement of 35 to be president. Join Captain Morgan in the #UNDER35POTUS movement to make things a little less weird.

1. This petition to make the first day of baseball season "a national holiday."

While we sadly aren't getting another day off work, the response is pretty great: "...It's a little outside our strike zone: creating permanent federal holidays is traditionally the purview of Congress. So, it's up to the men and women on Capitol Hill to decide whether to swing at this pitch."

2. All of these many petitions to change the national anthem.

Apparently a lot of people have some strong opinions about what our national anthem should be. Some want a rap song, while others are more into pop music. There are some downright magical ideas and one very, very good suggestion that most twentysomethings could get behind.

3. This terrifying request to "convert at least one national park into a dinosaur clone park."

The White House didn't respond to this, which is actually fine because it does not seem like a plan that would end well.

4. This one asking the White House to "formally acknowledge an extraterrestrial presence."

The White House did respond to this, saying there was no "evidence that any life exists outside our planet." However, they also provided a list of projects that are still searching the skies for signs of life. Good news for those who believe the truth is out there!

5. This petition to give everyone a "unicorn and a lollipop for Boxing Day."

Why though? The petition's author wrote: "What better way to make Boxing Day relevant than to give us our own mystical flying creatures we can majestically ride to work? And the lollipops? Well, lollipops are delicious." Seems reasonable!

6. This bold request to "secure resources and funding, and begin construction of a Death Star by 2016."

This petition actually garnered a response from White House officials who estimated the cost of building this to be $850,000,000,000,000,000.00. They also said, "The Administration does not support blowing up planets." That's probably pretty fair tbh.

7. This one to "consolidate the Department of Defense and the Census Bureau into a single Department of Kicking A** and Taking Names."

It does sounds pretty badass, no? Unfortunately, it didn't receive enough signatures to receive a response.

8. This simple inquiry for someone to "release the recipe for the Honey Ale home brewed at the White House."

This petition was actually successful! The White House responded with a pun-filled letter that began: "With public excitement about White House beer fermenting such a buzz, we decided we better hop right to it." And they released not one but two beer recipes. Well done!

9. This odd but well-meaning petition simply titled "Trouble Sleeping and Relaxing?"

This petition seeks to open an avenue for "investigating, understanding, and seeking ways to eliminate all unnecessary noise" so Americans can get more R&R. And who can argue with that?

10. This petition to "reform the coinage system" by getting rid of nickels and pennies.

The author of this one pointed out it costs more to make these coins than they're actually worth. And the White House responded by saying they're looking into it, but it's unlikely they'll get rid of them altogether. Too bad 'cause no one really uses pennies anymore, right?

11. This timely petition to "end the bi-annual time change."

While this did not receive a response, this petition dropped a serious truth bomb: "The most cited reason for maintaining DST, energy savings, does not make logical sense. The amount of daylight remains the same no matter what the clock shows." That's not wrong!

12. This self-referential petition to "actually take these petitions seriously instead of just using them as an excuse to pretend you are listening."

13. And finally, the most genius petition of all that suggests we give the Declaration of Independence to someone who really wants it.
