8 Reasons Why The Green Goblin SHOULDN'T Be In Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-man's goblin-themed nemesis just doesn't fit in the MCU.

1. He’s been dead for too long

The original movie version of Green Goblin died in the first Raimi Spider-man movie, which came in 2002. A lot has changed since 2002, so a 2002 guy suddenly appearing in a 2021 movie is just going to seem out of place. Like I said in my article, 8 Reasons Why Doctor Octopus Absolutely, Positively Shouldn't Be In "Spider-Man: No Way Home", when a supervillain’s been dead for awhile, it just seems silly to bring them back as if it was nothing.

2. His gadgets are too silly

Pumpkin bombs and bat-shaped gliders? Is the Green Goblin a supervillain or a Halloween Store? Sure, Batman can make bat-themed technology work, but that’s because Batman is one of the coolest superheroes ever. The Green Goblin, on the other hand, isn’t cool. He’s a fool, and you can tell because most of his weapons seem like bargain bin trick-or-treat props.

3. It’s not fair to the other Goblin villains

Hobgoblin? Grey Goblin? Demogoblin? Do these names mean NOTHING to the MCU? If you’re a Marvel fan, you know that the Green Goblin’s already had enough time in the spotlight. Spider-man’s got more than a few Goblin-themed adversaries, and a lot of them need a movie appearance much more than the Green Goblin does.

4. Goblins are too silly

Okay, I know I said earlier that there are other Goblin-themed supervillains who should be in the Spider-man movies instead. But let’s face it, the reason they’ve never been in a movie so far is because goblins are lame. Google even defines goblins as “a mischievous, ugly creature resembling a dwarf.” Mischievous and ugly? That doesn’t sound like a worthwhile supervillain to me.

5. Goblins are also too scary

I know this might seem like a contradiction, but goblins can be overly terrifying while still being pretty lame. It’s like how the concept of a cockroach isn’t scary, but it is scary when a cockroach is in your bed. Likewise, the MCU Spider-man films are supposed to be movies for the whole family. Do you really want some green faced goon scaring the kids away? It’s bad for business.

6. He’s over-used

The Green Goblin is Spider-man’s “arch-nemesis,” which is nerd-speak for “super-villain that appears too much.” You can only see Batman fight the Joker so many times before you start asking yourself why this clown won’t leave Batman alone already. Likewise, Spider-man’s already got too much on his plate, so he doesn’t need to fight his arch-nemesis for the millionth time. You gotta know when to hang up the glider.

7. There’s already too many villains in No Way Home

Look, I know I have my issues with Doctor Octopus, but if he’s going to be in No Way Home, that doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for the other villains. Electro and J. Jonah Jameson are also going to be in NO WAY HOME, and when you’ve got that many villains, there’s probably not going to be a lot of screen time for all of them. Do we really need the Green Goblin hogging up the already cramped space here? We don’t.

8. He’s too green, which will mess with the green screen technology

Marvel movies use a lot of green screens to create fantastical worlds with amazing graphics, and if you’ve ever used green screens, you know that you can’t have your actors wear too much green. Sure, the Hulk’s got green skin, and Loki likes wearing green, but neither of those folks are as green as the GREEN Goblin. Having the Green Goblin in this movie is a technical disaster waiting to happen.
