Lana Wachowski has been in the director’s chair for all of the Matrix movies so far, which doesn’t seem sustainable if the Matrix is going to compete with Marvel. When you think of the Matrix, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For me, it’s the fight scenes. Bullet time, kung fu, exploding cars; other movies have these things, but none of them do it with the style of the Matrix series. Well, none of them except for Christopher Nolan’s movies. Whether it’s his Batman films or his action-packed sci-fi showcases like Tenet, Nolan has proved time and time again that he knows how to deliver the sort of dynamic action the Matrix needs to truly thrive as a series.

3. Nolan has experience making movies about simulations

Besides the action though, The Matrix series also deals with heady philosophical concepts and the digital surrealness of living in a computer world. Rest assured that Nolan is up to the task of wrangling these concepts cinematically. While Nolan has never made a film about virtual reality, movies like Inception and Tenet are all about reality falling apart at the seams, and the way our perception tries to glue it all back together. This demonstrates Nolan’s acuity with Matrix-esque thematics.

4. Only half of the Wachowski sisters are available

Prior to the upcoming fourth Matrix movie, both the Wachowskis were on board to direct. However, it seems that in the latest Matrix entry, only Lana Wachowski was available to head the project. While I’m sure she’ll do a great job, the sudden splitting of the Wachowskis as a creative duo indicates the risk of hiring directors that come in pairs. Nolan tends to direct on his own, which makes him a reliable choice for the subsequent Matrix movies.

5. The other Wachowski movies weren’t that good

According to Rotten Tomatoes, The Matrix Reloaded got a 73% on the Tomatometer™, while The Matrix Revolutions got a paltry 35%. Let’s compare that to Nolan’s latest movies: Dunkirk got a 92% on the Tomatometer™, while Tenet got a 70%. Those put together have a much higher average score compared to The Matrix sequels. Among other reasons, this is why Nolan should be trusted with the future of the franchise.

6. Michael Caine would be in the next Matrix movie if Nolan was there

Aside from great visuals and great action, another guarantee that comes with Nolan as a director is when he brings his pal Michael Caine along. Caine is a fantastic actor with a gift for lending gravitas to everything he does. Imagine what he could do in the world of the Matrix.

7. The Matrix needs to be more British

As seen in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic film, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Keanu has a great English accent, but he never gets to use it, not even in the Matrix movies. That said, Nolan is known for being British, and as a Brit, he knows he’s gotta have Keanu do the accent at least one more time on the big screen. That’s exactly the sort of stuff we need to see and hear if The Matrix series wants to stay fresh.

8. It would be sad if Batman was Nolan’s last big franchise

Sure, movies like Tenet and Interstellar are great, but they’ll never reach the heights of Batman or The Terminator. Iconic movies need iconic characters, and if Nolan wants to make the most of his film career, he’s gotta get back to the franchises. The Matrix could really help him in this regard. He needs them as much as they need him.
