9 Caricatures Of Black People In The Media

Jim Crow was originally a character in a play, and laws were made based off his character that haunt the black community. Today, some of the stereotypes are still around and they are still adversely affecting the black community. So, I decided to fuse old and new stereotypes of black people. Here is a list of the few that I find are the most prevalent in the media.

1. Black Athlete

The majority of the media, athletics in the back community takers the importance away from education. Since there images are repeated in the media ,it creates a perception that the only way for black boys to make it is by getting good at sports. I way to fix this is to show black people that become famous for being academics.

2. Criminal

Unfortunately the other part of the media shoe black people as criminals. Also, more representation of black people in media where mugshots of black people aren’t the only thing that is seen on the nightly news. Black people need more positive representation in the media, because the news only reports the bad in the world.

3. Unintelligent

Children in black communities aren’t praised for being smart and when they are they are seen as white. This stereotype is perpetuated in the movies Holes. The chapter Zero, who is black, is always talked down by people in charge of the camp talk doesn’t to him. A solution to this issue would be to first, remove the stigma of being intelligent then, award intelligence.

4. Angry Black Woman

Black people hardly ever get the recognition they deserve but, black women get the worst of this treatment. I don't think any Black Woman is angry for the sake of being angry. I just think they are passionate about what they do and I wish other people could see that instead of someone who is "upset" Tyler Perry's Diary of Mad Black Women. She helps this guy and he became successful and leaves her. she fits all the stereotypes of a and angry black women, but the reason why she does this out of passion.

5. Welfare Queen

Welfare Queen is fairly new stereotype. This lady in this stereotype is usually seen as "ghetto" and obnoxious. She wears the expensive clothes and the children wear scarps. It may not be surprising but, another Tyler Perry Movie describes another type of stereotype well. In Madea’s Big Happy Family the one scene when the baby mama wants to get more more money for their son.

6. Mandingo

An animalistic view of black people created during slave times. some of the most derogatory words that bald people are called are also things that refer to animals. As an example “coon” which is short for raccoon. This is obviously dehumanizing because, you are calling a human an animal. I mostly hear this word within the black community.

7. Mammy

The mammy caricature was seen as apart of the family during slavery. They depicted as bigger and dark-skinned black women who, was also desexualized. That being said the last of the caricature is still here the Aunt Jemima syrup bottle. The bottle has changes over the years but, the symbolism is still there. A way to fix this would more representation of dark women.

8. Tragic Mulatta

This stereotype was light skin or mixed black people who tried to keep the secret of being black. I think the show that may best represent this is scandal, because Olivia’s dad, Elam would always remind her that she was black and she would get upset.To break this stereotype, television shows should more pretty darker women. But also, the light skin women should grow to feel comfortable being black.

9. Uncle Tom

Uncle Toms are the male equivalent to mammies. They too are dark skinned and desexualized. Uncle Ruckus, from boondocks. In this television show, Ruckus thinks he’s white and even though he is constantly treated like he is black. He looks past this and continues to act like this. A way to combat is for these black men to realize they are black.
