New Zealand journalist Patrick Gower has been covering both the Trump and Clinton campaigns for the last week in the lead up to the US election.
Last week, covering a Trump rally in Florida, Gower attempted to make conversation with an ardent Trump supporter. The supporter was not at all enthused, believing Gower to be a part of "the Clinton media". A video of their exchange has since racked up over 4,000,000 views and 16,000 shares.
"I'm not part of the Clinton media," Gower can be heard saying in a video of the conversation.
"What 'Zealand?' the supporter asks. "You're not part of the Clinton network are you? You're not part of the lying media are you?"
"We're from New Zealand, what have we done?" says Gower, before the supporter waves him away calling him "disgusting".
"You sell out your own profession... Your children's food, you sell it out!"
"He was literally frothing at the mouth, taken aback," Gower told BuzzFeed News.
"One person was trying to say, y'know, 'New Zealand is a country', but it didn't help, and then another guy popped up and was saying 'we are the media now'. He was saying, 'you're on Facebook Live! We are our own media! We don't need you."
Gower said there was a bit of an edge to that particular Trump rally, as the Republican nominee had been encouraging his supporters to reject the "lying media" that day – going so far as to call out NBC reporter Katie Tur by name.
