Supermarket giant Woolworths has done a full temporary 180 on its plastic bag ban after Australian customers struggled to come to terms with the fact that – yes – you would have to bring your own bag from now on.
The company had warned its customers months ahead of time that the change was coming, but when it came into full effect earlier this month it seems many Australians had not been paying attention.
Conservative commentator Andrew Bolt took time to rant to his viewers about the negative impacts of reusable bags. For the record, plastic bags bring problems like the release of toxic chemicals, the fact they aren't recyclable, and the small little point that they cause LITERAL FLOODS.
Stores in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and Western Australia will offer free reusable plastic bags (usually 15 cents) to shoppers for the next 10 days, presumably in an effort to get people to actually use them and not get upset when the plastic bag ban returns on July 9.
On Friday, the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association even sent out a press release reminding people that Coles and Big W would be rolling out plastic bag bans in July, and that “there is no excuse for abusive behaviour to retail staff.”
“While we understand that some customers may be frustrated by this change, there is absolutely no excuse for abusive or violent behaviour towards retail staff,” said SDA national secretary Gerard Dwyer.
