Sixteen people were treated by Queensland paramedics over the weekend after overdosing on a mystery drug that police are yet to identify.
The overdoses – which occurred in various places around Queensland's Gold Coast – left two people in a "serious condition", with one in a coma.
Senior paramedic Stephen Burns said 16 overdoses in a 48-hour period was "the worst he has seen in the 24 years [he has] been working on the Gold Coast".
In a media briefing yesterday, Superintendent Michelle Stenner said investigations were ongoing as to what the mysterious drug was.
"[Those who took the drug] chose to take these substances, not knowing where they're made from, not knowing who's providing it to them, not knowing what the consequences are," she said.
Some news outlets are reporting the drug to be "flakka", otherwise known as "gravel", a type of bath salt linked to a 2012 incident that saw a user chew the face off a homeless man.
A spokesperson for Queensland police told BuzzFeed News there would be no further comment on the incident.
