In many parts of the world the approach to drugs – especially cannabis – is changing.

Over the weekend Uruguay legalised recreational cannabis. In doing so, it joined a host of other countries either flirting with the concept of medicinal cannabis or going balls to the wall and fully legalising the drug.

Australia is no different. In a landmark decision last year the federal government moved to legalise medicinal cannabis. There's still a lot of work to do – activists say the processes the government has in place for access are outdated and too complicated – but the decision to look into medicinal cannabis represents a changing perspective on a drug that was one associated with burnouts and "reefer madness".
