10 Things I Love About Being Assyrian

Basically, these are just a few of the things I love about being Assyrian but there are definitely many, many more!

1. Never Ending Family Tree

Cousins on cousins on cousins…It would probably take you hours to come up with a complete family tree because of how big Assyrian families are…but the bigger the family the bigger the party

2. Parties All Year Long

When do you not have a wedding, or a baptism, or an engagement party, or a meshmatha, or a communion, or a just-for-fun party? Exactly, Assyrians just LOVE to party no matter what!

3. Summer Picnics

Those fun, after-church picnics on a hot Sunday in the summer is definitely one reason I love being Assyrian! Listening to amazing music, dancing, eating delicious kabobs and just having a great time with family and friends is something I look forward to whenever summer gets near.

4. Uh-mazing Music

From upbeat and ready to dance music to classic love songs from artists like Ashur Bet Sargis and Linda George, Assyrian music is always something I enjoy listening to (and the lyrics are always great too)!

5. Being Bilingual

I LOVE being bilingual, I think it’s one of my favourite things about being Assyrian. Being able to speak, read and write another language is a great tool to have throughout both my personal and career life (and it keeps people from eavesdropping on my conversations-bonus!).

6.Mouth-watering Food

Assyrian food is definitely something I probably would have a hard time living without…it’s just THAT good. From the dolma to the shawarma all the way to the riza ou’ shorba, the food is just too good to pass up…no matter how hard I really try.

7. Worldwide Connections

No matter where you go, how far or close, if there are other assyrians there it will automatically feel like home because of their hospitality and kindness. Being able to always unite and come together as one is another reason I love being Assyrian.

Let’s not forget how great our PRIDE is! How proud Assyrian’s are about being Assyrian definitely makes me happy to be Assyrian as well. Assyrians don’t deny their culture, we say we are Assyrian loud and proud and we definitely do not let other people tear us down!

9. Our History

The history of our people is extremely extensive. Learning a little about it whenever I get the chance makes me realize how far Assyrians have come and what they have gone through to preserve our culture, making me appreciate being Assyrian even more. And, I mean, how cool is it that we can speak the language Jesus spoke? It’s pretty great!

10. Khigga

Assyrian line dances (aka khigga) definitely make every single event more enjoyable. Dancing the night away, whether it be by goobareh, belati, cheykhani, the uniqueness of our dances and how much fun everyone has is an amazing perk of being Assyrian!
