1. "One of my roommates decided that she was going to eat her smelly food but not actually take care of cleaning up after it."

"She'd leave unwashed tuna cans in the sink or put them in the garbage can in our communal kitchenette and just leave them there. It was worse when she had the suite to herself for a day or two and the stuff just piled up. At the same time, she told everyone they weren't allowed to eat bananas in our suite because the smell bothered her."

2. "I roomed with my best friend in high school and she fought with her boyfriend all the time and would leave dirty dishes in the sink."

"The worst part was she would leave a soaking wet towel on the floor after she took a shower. She'd spend hours in front of the bathroom mirror, sitting on the sink, doing her makeup and leaving used q tips covered in makeup and eyeliner in the sink."

5. "The absolute worst were these two girls in my halls. One night they came home from a night out and woke me up with being so loud in our corridor."

"I was obviously annoyed but was just going to ignore them until I heard them dare one of them to pull the fire alarm. There were probably 100+ people living in those halls who would all have to evacuate.

So, the fire alarm is blaring, I go out and tell them to go tell the porters so they can deactivate the alarm and cancel the fire brigade so we could one: get the noise to stop, two: not have to evacuate the entire halls, and three: avoid all getting fined.

They denied it, so I checked the fire alarm and (shock horror) it was smashed in! We then evacuated to the main quad and some of my friends were in the same halls. I told them what had happened and about the argument and that I just couldn't take dealing with them again that night so went to theirs for a few hours till I saw all the lights in my corridor go off so I thought the coast was clear to go back to my room."

6. "My husband and I had a roommate a long time ago who had a fish tank. No fish, just the tank, and for whatever reason, they always left it on."

"Once, her car wouldn't start before work so I let her take mine. A few hours later I got a phone call from my furious dad demanding to know where I was. I told him I was home studying, so where was my car? 

Well, she borrowed it to go to work, but instead of going to work, she decided to ride around in my convertible and then led the police on a high-speed chase. She lost them, or so she thought because they were waiting for her at our apartment. Her dad came and got her and dragged her home four hours away. He was a good man and continued to pay for her half of the rent so that I wasn't stuck."

"If you went into his room his floor was ankle-deep in garbage. He would tie his used condoms into a knot and fling them into the mess. I cleaned the bathroom and he got mad at me because I ran his crusty-ass toothpaste-covered toothbrush in hot water to try and sanitise it. He always acted like I owed him something. I moved out as soon as I could."

10. "I lived with someone for less than a year who kept guinea pigs in cages in a spare bedroom where I kept my work clothes."

"If they cleaned the cages once a month, I was shocked. I had to throw away some very nice clothing and moved the rest after the first month there because I couldn’t get the smell of rodent piss out. 

I would find little pieces of shit and bedding in my shoes because the roommate would leave the closet door open after getting their food and the guinea pigs would kick dirty bedding everywhere constantly. The smell was absolutely horrendous throughout the house and I could smell it from my bedroom with the doors closed."

"He was a cook in multiple restaurants over the years, he KNEW you couldn't freeze eggs. Yet I found either cracked or frozen whole eggs in the freezer when I went to get ice cubes. I had to convince him not to put them in the freezer for a good 10-15 minutes because if I just tried to stop him he'd get upset and start yelling. Not my worst roommate by far, but definitely the oddest specific example I have."

12. "I used to live with two guys and a girl (I’m a girl) in a four-bedroom apartment right after undergrad."

"One time I was watching Netflix on the shared TV and turned off subtitles, and forgot to turn them back on before switching off the TV. The next day one of the guys switched on his TV and realised the subs were off. 

He then SCREAMED at me in front of the other roommate and his girlfriend at the time about 'touching his stuff' (I was explicitly told when I moved in that I was welcome to use the TV). He apologised later on and we got along just fine the rest of the time I lived there, but I never used any communal stuff in that apartment ever again."

"The roommate swore that he was selling all of it – he worked odd jobs and sometimes got paid in items instead of money. But the stuff was never sold! A year living essentially in my bedroom because the common areas were full of exercise bikes, real bikes, tables full of books, shopping cart full of DVDs, etc.

The other roommate and I eventually cleared a space on the dining table to eat. I was young and worked crazy hours so I didn't mind it much at the time, but looking back I realise how inconsiderate of him it was."

We had a dishwasher and I always emptied it but he couldn’t be bothered to put them in there. Talking to him didn’t work so I just took a big black trash bag put all of his mouldy nasty dirty dishes in it and put it next to his bedroom door every time he did that."
