I Tried A Bunch Of Face Masks So You Don't Have To

Which face masks are worth the money? I tried out a few to see which worked the best!

As a girl whose struggled with acne for the majority of her life, trying new products seems like an endless trial-and-error process that usually ends in little-to-no difference on my skin. Masks seem to be the new beauty trend among flawless-skin beauty vloggers, and it seems like everyone out there has their favorite ones. So I decided to try out some masks to see if they live up to the hype.

    Origins' RITUALITEA™ Matcha Madness

    First Impressions

This mask is actually a powder that you mix with water to create “a creamy effervescent oasis of calm.” Being the over-achiever that I am, I put way too much water in, making my oasis seem a little more like a river. (To be fair, I tried it out again a few days later and though it was thicker than this attempt, it was still pretty thin for a face mask.) Mixing the water and powder together created a bubbly cream that made it pretty fun to put on my face. The smell was delicious, if I didn’t know better, I definitely would have tried to eat this. It smelled like relaxing green tea, and left my stomach grumbling through the process. Putting it on was quite a test, since it has small clumps that either latch onto your skin or fall off onto the floor. That mixed with the concoction you just made makes this a clean bathroom’s nightmare. I’m still finding green specs around my sink! The color makes you look exactly like a ripe avocado while you’re waiting for it to dry, but as a wise friend pointed out: “If you’re going to be a Chipotle topping, you might as well be the fancy one!” Overall, my skin felt refreshed and ready for the day. Though I didn’t see a difference in acne, my skin did look a little more soft!

Montagne Jeunesse's 7th Heaven Argan Oil Mud

Product: 7th Heaven Argan Oil Mud

    Company: Montagne Jeunesse

Promises: "Deeply Cleanses & Balances Skin"

    Skin Type: Combination & Oily

    Cost: $1.37

    First Impressions

This mask was pretty underwhelming. These are the types of mask you pass in Walmart and Target every day, but usually only buy them if you’re heading to a girls’ night, accompanied by wine and gossip. It’s pretty cheap and comes in an easy one-time-use packet, and is thick enough to lather your face in acne-fighting goop. However, the smell is similar to fruit mixed with cleaning supplies - not exactly something that would relax you. It dried pretty patchy, staying a light, wet brown in some areas and dry, dark brown in some others… I basically looked like a giraffe. My face did feel a bit tighter afterwards, but I didn’t notice any real difference to my complexion.

Origins' Out Of Trouble 10 Minute Mask

    First Impressions

This mask smelled like a watered down VapoRub… It wasn’t strong enough to clean out my nostrils, but hopefully it was strong enough to clean out my pores? (Is that how it works??) The texture was thick and creamy, and the feeling was pretty tingly. It wasn’t anything irritating, but it did give me a feeling that it was cleaning my gross skin! When the timer was up and I had to wash off the mask, it hadn’t dried or crusted over, which made it much easier to wipe off and didn’t leave my face feeling like it needed tons of hydration afterwards. My skin felt very refreshed and revived afterwards - it was like when you chew a minty gum and feel a strange cool feeling in your mouth next time you inhale. The next morning, I didn’t notice a difference in acne, but my redness diminished quite a bit!

    Lush's Mask of Magnaminty

    First Impressions

I was pretty excited to try this out. After many hours of research (AKA watching endless hours of beauty vlogs), all signs seemed to point to the Mask of Magnaminty. The color was a lighter green than the Matcha Madness, but the smell was much stronger. It smelled like strong mint chocolate chip ice cream (yum!) and had exfoliating evening primrose seeds mixed into the concoction. Eventually, the smell seemed a bit too strong for me and left my eyes red and watering, but I toughed it out because, as the outdated gender conformist saying goes: Beauty is pain! It felt very cool and, after the first minute, it felt like my face was submerged in ice, but my skin felt very clean and revived after I washed it off. The next day, my face looked much smoother than usual, and I even noticed a few blemishes had vanished!

    Final Thoughts

The best product in my opinion was definitely the Mask of Magnaminty, it made me feel much more confident in my skin, and I even received a few compliments from friends! However, the most disappointing was the 7th Heaven Argan Oil Mud. The smell ruined it for me, since it was more similar to Clorox than the refreshing berries I thought I'd be smelling, and it left my skin very dry. Even if you’re having a girls’ night in with your girlfriends, try and splurge a little for your face mask. Not only will you smell fresh, but your face will thank you in the long run!
