Hey, you know what I'm craving? A juicy tasty hot dog! Wonder how this heaven comes to be? The hotdog starts out life as a collection of “trimmings” – scrap cuts taken from other pieces of meat. These trimmings are ground up like hamburger meat before cornstarch, salt and other flavorings are added to the mix. The next part of the hotdog’s journey is probably the most disgusting. Water is sprayed over the whole meat mixture as it is churned up in a vat and corn syrup is added for a dash of sweetness. Next, the mixture heads to the stuffing machine, where it is pumped into tubes of cellulose tubing.Now starting to look like hotdogs, the little sausages head off to a smoke machine for extra flavor and then to the oven. The franks are then drenched in cold, salty water to prepare them for packaging. A special machine peels and slices the cellulose casing off the dogs, before they are checked and packed up.
