Authoritarian Parenting Style

Authoritarian parenting is a style of parenting that contains characteristics of “high demandingness, low responsiveness, attempts to shape, control and evaluate behavior in accordance with absolute standards, parental authority is emphasized” (Roaché 2016).

High Demandingness

The parent attempts to totally create, manage and critique the behavior of the child in accordance with a complete “standard of conduct from some higher authority" (Le Poire 2006).

The parent wants total acceptance of standards from the child and does so with the use of harsh punishment by strong methods as well as looking for tactics to diminish the will of the child. Authoritarian parenting style is associated to parents who are extremely critical their children which has a negative impact on the child(ren).

Low Responsiveness

There is a need for total compliance to the will of the parent and/or authority. The parent's authority is not to be challenged. There are often phrases like “because I said so” told to children as they are being raised by their parents.

This absence of autonomy for the child is maintained and endorsed in the absence of communication between child and parent as a two way street. The parent acts on impulsive control, which eliminates the possibility of warm and loving environment for the child.
