The rise of processed foods and single-use plastics meant lots of trash. In the 1950s people were sceptical the idea that leaving trash on the ground could have any sort of profound effect on the Earth. But scientists and governements all over the world were starting to figure out that not just litter, but more broadly, pollution, was doing real damage. Luckly, major corperations banned together to distract people from the fact that they were creating the systemic issue of large-scale pollution by reminding us that we were the problem! They were able to successfully convince generations of people that it was actually littering that was the greatest environmemtal threat. Ah the good 'ole days!

You're a Litterbug

Leeching is a practice that dates back to the beginning of the Common Era. Evidence of leeching has been found in Anciant Indian text and Greco-Roman texts alike. It's even still used today in specific instances with farm raised leeches approved for medical use. But the height of their use was back in the 1800s. The Western World was crazy for leeches and doctors used them to "cure" EVERYTHING from a cold to seizures. The method was so ubiquitous the slang name for a physician was a "leech." In some cases people lost as much as 80% blood loss in one session! To be fair, I can see how you'd forget about your cold after that.

You're in Love with Leeching

In the United States the perception of seatbelts has changed drastically since the 40s and 50s. Though they'd been around for years before they really started to kick up contravercy in the 40s with people arguing it should be their right to not wear a seatbelt and that it may get them stuck in a car being submerged in water or engulfed in flames. People wrote opinion pieces against seatbelts despite all the scientific research in favour of them. Some even went as far as cutting them out of their cars! Lucky, the US made the three-point seatbelt mandetory in 1968 and we all happily comply! Unless you're in a taxi; then, like, who cares am I right?

You're an Anti-Seatbelter

Ah the 90s! It was all frosted eyeshadow, butterfly hair clips, grunge music, and emaciated heroin users! The heroin chic aesthetic was a response to what was thought to be the overly glamorized and beautiful models of the 80s and early 90s. Add more easily accessible and cheaper heroin and suddenly extremely thin, pale, women with dark circles under their eyes are on every Calvin Klein ad. Jaime King and Kate Moss were the epitome of the look. Fashion and music were saturated with heroin and the attempt at capturing the gritty reality of it all ended up creating a new glamorized elite largely characterized by drug addiction and looking like you could collapse at any moment. By the end of the decade enough famous people had died that we decided to collectively move on from such a romanticized depiction of drug use. Can you imagine your fav brand having an ~opioid crisis~ aesthetic?
